Colombo Fort Cafe (Dutch Hospital)

Dutch Hospital, Bank of Ceylon Mawatha, Colombo 1

Colombo Fort Cafe is a Harpo's run restaurant located in the popular Dutch Hospital shopping complex, serving up delicious pizzas, pastas and burgers.

Colombo Fort Cafe, run by Harpo's, is one of the better places to dine in at the Dutch Hospital complex. They do a range of meats, pastas, pizzas, and tapas and burgers if you're looking to snack on something a little lighter - either way, if you don't go too crazy with the drinks and desserts, it'll cost about Rs. 1500 per head, and it's quality stuff.

Ambience & Service

The Colombo Fort Cafe is visually a really pleasant place to chill out at - chalk blue furniture, red brick and warm yellow walls - cheerful in the daytime. The chair sizes are rather whimsical though, either bar-high or very low - head for the long cushy seat in the right corner of the room, it's the best seat. Our waiters seemed to be constantly preoccupied but were clearly well trained and brought our meals to us pretty fast.

The Food

There is a lot of food to choose from in the menu. They've got your typical range of Harpo's pizzas, in the Rs. 1000-1500 range, which are generally made with high quality ingredients and are great value for money. Check out our review of Harpo's for more of that. This time we went for some alternate mains: the breakfast burger, and the chili prawn alioli.

The Breakfast Burger is great fun. It's a gigantic double-decker burger featuring beef patties (you can opt for chicken), coupled with cheese, tomatoes, onions, fried egg, and bacon (which I asked to hold back on - yes I know, blasphemous!). You get plenty of fat hot potato wedges on the side too.

This is not a burger you can eat decently. As you can see, there's a knife stuck in the middle, going into the wooden holder underneath to fasten the burger. I tried eating it like a normal burger but unless you're the Hulk it's not going to fit. So we actually ate this one with a fork and knife, cutting off chunk by chunk and shamelessly making a mess of things. The patties are tender, crumbly and delicious, reminded me a little bit of the Zephyr burger in Mirissa, and with that generous layer of fried egg and crunchy fresh veggies, this is easily one of my favourite burgers in town. It costs Rs. 725 though, so it's no random snack, but it's definitely quality and generously portioned.

Our chili prawn alioli promised 'plump and succulent grilled prawns' and they delivered - these were almost jumbo sized, juicy and spiced up with chili and garlic, in a generous heaping of shoestring pasta. This is a slightly expensive dish at Rs. 1350. It has to be said though that the Dutch Hospital is an expensive place to be, and compared to the rest of the complex, the food here is at least good bang for your money as far as flavour and ingredients go.

They've got a handful of dessert options available - blueberry, chocolate cake, biscuit pudding and a few - our waiter recommended the passion cheesecake. It costs Rs. 475 and it's tasty and well prepared: a very mild spongey biscuit layer below a layer of soft, pudding textured cheesecake, topped with a strong, sweet passion fruit sauce, and fresh strawberry. It's not mind blowing but this sweet-sour dessert is a cooling, happy way to end your meal.

Conclusion

Colombo Fort Cafe is a snazzy place to dine at if you're around the Fort end of town. It's definitely not cheap, it would be surprising if anything at the Dutch Hospital was, but considering the quality of ingredients and portions, and compared to the rest of the precinct (Heladiv, Ministry of Crab, Taphouse), it's affordable and we think relatively good value for money. The burgers, pizzas and pastas are always reliable if you're up for a quality, tasty meal, so if you're scouting for good food in a great location, this is one of Colombo's better options.

TIP

Reserve your table because it can get crowded.

Pizzas: not bad at all, considering the offer in Colombo. I tried the vegetable ones because I cannot conceive chicken pizzas (there were too many on the Menu…)
Mains: not a great experience. We ordered seer fish (1600 approximately). A small seer fish (grilled perfectly though), accompanied by 2 (LITERALLY TWO!!) green beans, 1 broccoli, 1 raw carrot and a very very tiny portion of rice (almost invisible).
Overall experience: OK. I would just stick to the Pizzas…
