Dutch Reformed Church (Galle)

Church Street, Fort, Galle

  • Open 8:30AM to 5:00PM

The Dutch Reformed Church is one of the oldest Protestant churches in Sri Lanka. It has beautiful honeycomb style floors inside, and has a startling collection of stone carved tombstones worked into the floors and the garden.

The Dutch Reformed Church of the Galle fort, also known as the Groote Kerk, is one of the oldest Protestant churches still in use on the island. It was built by the Dutch in 1755 and is paved with tombstones from the old Dutch cemetery. The church garden itself is beautiful and haunting, with lush grass in the center flanked wall to wall by stone tablets.

Here are some photos of this startling church which is, for obvious reasons, one of the most visited places in the fort.
