Gami Gedara

176, Jambugasmulla Mawatha, Nugegoda

A long-standing rice & curry name that has slid down the ladder a bit.

Gami Gedara is a name well known to us for their rice and curry spread - a name that we really liked and then watched as they slid down the ladder a bit. But now they are at a new spot down Jambugasmulla Mw while their previous location is occupied by Thuna Paha. We thought of dropping by for a quick lunch in hopes that they’ve stepped up their game.

Food

They have their curry options neatly displayed on clay pots that you can choose to decorate your plate with. You can couple either white or red rice with protein options like chicken curry/roast, sausages, fish curry and pork.

We went with the Roast Chicken Rice & Curry (Rs. 330) in which there was, white rice, pumpkin curry, parippu, chickpea mallum, carrot sambol alongside, of course, a roast-chicken leg.

The rice was cooked well and was fluffy while the chicken leg was cooked to have a slightly crunchy outer layer with juicy meat inside which was a tad hard to separate from the bones. Parrippu and pumpkin curry both added moisture to the spread and a bit of sweetness too, which specifically comes from the pumpkin curry. We didn't get much in the way of curry flavour from either of them. Carrot sambol came in with a fresh crunch to the mix and the chickpea mallum brought a leafy note.

It was a decent spread but there wasn't anything to rave about and my lunch partner didn't seem all that satisfied with the meal either.

We were excited about the Pork Rice & Curry (Rs. 350), sporting white rice, pork curry, ambarella curry, parrippu, carrot sambol, wambotu & soya meat curry.

Half of the chunks in the pork curry was fatty pieces, and much of the rest had boney pieces in them too. We felt let down. It packed a decent amount of gravy with a good peppery note but they could have done it much better as we feel. The amberalla curry was a head-scratcher since it did not have the zing we expected. It tasted flat and only had a very very mild sour note. Even though mustard seeds were visible in the parrippu, it didn't have any mustard taste. The wambotu and soya meat curry had a good curry flavour, and a tinge of sourness to it - which, even though ill fit, added some depth to the meal.

We just mixed everything together and sought help from papadum and the fried chilli to make the meal work.

Ambience and Service

We didn't have issues with the service, although we wished they were a bit generous with the portions.

The places have more than enough light coming from the huge glass panes and enough seating for 6 people at once.

The coconut weave added a nice gamay wibe to the calm and quiet inside and we got to enjoy our lunch in peace.

Conclusion

We've always had high expectations from Gami Gedara, since we remember how they used to be. At least our meals seemed fresh and made from quality produce. However, their portion sizes are not satisfying and the prices are a bit high and they have room to improve on the flavours.

If you are stretched to find something to the stomach while in the area we can give a passable nod to this place.

TIP

Try their Mixed Fried Rice.

My first and last visit to this place. The food was ok but but very stingy in serving. The staff was very arrogant and have very poor attitude in talking to customers.

Great tasting food and good portions! The place is small and gets busy during lunch so you need to get in early but it's well worth it for the price.
It's right next to the road at nugegoda junction but the area itself is sealed so the food and eating areas are protected from the dust. Thumbs up for hygiene!

Went there for lunch on Sunday and I'm proud to report that they haven't declined in quality at all.
In fact, they're super crowded, so make sure you go early.
They've even got a live band playing!
