Formerly known as the Gill's Food Arcade, Colombo Bistro is a food court located right next to the Fairway Colombo Hotel at Hospital Street. After trudging around the very crowded BBW preview sale last week, we decided to drop in here for a quick lunch.
Colombo Bistro has five main restaurants that serve up Indian, Chinese, Italian, and Western cuisine, as well as a juice parlor. Their Indian restaurant wasn't operative at the time we were there, but the rest of the restaurants were open.
The Beef Lasagne (Rs. 850) we ordered from Italian Pizza and Pasta was generous with minced beef, tucked in between well-cooked layers of pasta sheets, but it wasn't cheesy as we expected it to be. Also, the beef filling was quite dry, and we couldn't even get a hint of red or white sauce.
We got a Chicken Fried Rice (Rs. 490) from Asian Dragon, and it was a bit of a let down in comparison to the same dish Aisha got in our first look. It tasted pretty generic; a basmati rice tossed with spring onions, carrots, egg, tiny pieces of chicken, and that was all. No chop suey or chili paste like last time; just a rice with some tomato sauce on the side. On the bright side, the rice was cooked well, not crazy-oily, and sharable between two people.
As for drinks, we got a Lime Juice (Rs. 330) and Peach Iced Tea (Rs. 330) from the juice parlor.
The peach iced tea however, had a chockful of peach syrup at the bottom of the glass. But it was quite delicious once it got all mixed up; a swirl of peachy flavor that runs through the strong aroma of tea.
Our food and drinks took around 20 minutes to arrive, and the staff here is very friendly and helpful. Unlike in the other food courts in Colombo, it's not self-service, but getting the attention of a waiter could be a tad difficult when the place is swarming with customers.
As for the ambience, they've got a large, clean, air-conditioned space with neatly arranged comfortable chairs and tables. The atmosphere is not exactly calm and quiet, but not loud and congested like the MC or Crescat food courts.
Colombo Bistro is probably one of the best places to drop in for a quite bite, for a reasonable price, if you're in the area.
