Healthy Living delivers healthy and tasty buth packets, mainly to offices. We tried a regular chicken packet and it was a sensible size and quite well seasoned. It was healthy without tasting 'healthy', which we appreciate.
It's a buth packet, so let's just get to it. Healthy Living serves a range of rice and curry which they change every day. You can order chicken, fish or veg.
We ordered chicken (Rs. 250), which came with cubed chicken breast, okra (ladies fingers), gotu kola and what we think was a cucumber curry. The most notable thing is the amount of rice. It's basically one fourth the regular serving you get. For most buth packets we, personally, remove half of the rice before eating it. If we were working as dock unloaders in Pettah that amount of calories might make sense, but for someone working a desk job that amount of rice leads to immediate sleepiness, proximate obesity and future health problems galore.
According to Healthy Living, the average buth packet has around 1,400 calories whereas theres has only 600.
For us, however, the crucial thing remains taste. If a buth packet doesn't taste good we're not obese enough (yet) to eat it purely for health reasons. Thankfully, the Healthy Choices lunches are good. Better than most but packets we've had, actually. They use chicken breast and tuna for no bones on the meat side and the vegetables are all fresh, well-seasoned and - since they serve less rice - you end up having enough to go with each bite.
We've tried other healthy lunch options where they tasted depressing, but with this lunch you get the comfort of rice and curry without the guilt.
Healthy Living is a delivery service, but within certain areas. They said they serve mainly offices around Galle Road and Duplication Road and told us, quite apologetically, that they couldn't deliver to Colombo 5. We were able, however, to collect our order as takeaway.
If you want to order you need to call before 9 AM (we called at 9:40 and they let that go). A lot of customers seem to give regular orders through their offices.
An effort like Healthy Living is long overdue. A good Sri Lankan rice and curry is hard to beat and, frankly, most of us don't want anything else for lunch. However, regular buth packet portions are really unhealthy and, frankly, not that satisfying since the rice, meat and veg are completely unbalanced.
Healthy Living provides reasonable portions of tasty, thoughtful rice and curry. It's a sensible evolution of the buth packet and we welcome it.
Order before 9 AM for lunch and before 4 PM for dinner
