Java Lounge in Jawatta has become our go to spot for casual meetings or we just want to grab a quick coffee. They've got an accessible location, some surprisingly good pasta dishes and coffee that hits the spot more often than not.

Java Lounge in Jawatta has become our go to spot for casual meetings or if we just want to grab a quick coffee. They've got an accessible location, some surprisingly good pasta dishes and coffee that hits the spot more often than not.

The Food & Coffee

When Java Lounge first opened up it caused quite a stir with its Starbucks Pretense. Now they've dropped all that and have come into it's own as one of the better coffee franchises in Colombo. Their prices aren't exactly cheap with coffee priced between Rs. 450 - Rs. 600, but their regular cup is certainly larger than that of Coffee Bean.

The Java chip coffee frappe (Rs. 590) is one of their signature coffees and it's quite good. Coffee purists may not love it but for me this was a good balance of coffee and chocolate. Whenever I see some of the specials at places like Barista, I see the sheer amount of cream and always picture the cashier asking "would you like some extra calories with that?". In this case I liked that they didn't overdo the cream on top, and the fact that it wasn't sweetened, so mixing it will just make your frappe creamier as oppose to an overload of sugar.

Java Lounge offers a range of main courses which most include pastas and a few rice options. We weren't really expecting much, but the spagetti carbonara (Rs. 650) turned out be a pretty tasty and filling. The spagetti itself was cooked well with a good amount creamy carbonara sauce to add both texture and flavour. This one comes with beef bacon which we weren't too happy about, but tasted quite good all things considered. The one thing that we didn't appreciate was the excess oil at the base.

They also offer a selection of baked goods, which are quite pricey but decent nonetheless. We tried the cheese croissant (Rs. 290) and the fruit danish (Rs. 190). The croissant wasn't oozing cheese or anything like that but it was still freshly baked with the flavour of the cheese coming through.

On the other hand we weren't too crazy about the fruit danish. While it had a good mix of fruits like strawberries, star fruit, pears and grapes, the pastry itself was a dense and chewy.

Ambience & Service

As you enter Java Lounge seems like a relatively small space, but after you take a seat and adjust to the setting you'll find that they do have plenty seating options. I'm generally not a huge fan of monotone interiors specially when it comes to eateries, but in this case the slight offset between the browns works surprisingly well. They've got a few tables outside as well as a small garage area with a projector.

The service at Java Lounge is better than at most cafes. The staff is well spoken and attentive and they do small things like greet you when you walk in the door which is always nice. One thing we noticed, however, was that the main dishes do tend to take a while to be prepared.

Conclusion

Java Lounge does a good job of balancing out the three most important factors of a coffee shop- the coffee, food and ambience with good service and a centrally accessible location.

TIP

They have free WiFi, which is nice, but from what we experienced it can be excruciatingly slow at times.

This place is NOT only heavily overpriced but the quality of beverages and food is NOT at all what one can expect. They sell an ice latte which is basically instant coffee, richlife milk and tons of ice cubes. By the time the ice melts, you basically have extremely watery coffee. There is no sugar and don't tell you to add sugar nor were there any sachets. Each latte is LKR 530.00 for crap they call ice latte. Then I asked for a slice of strawberry cheesecake which was this tiny piece of cake placed in a large box with No doily or anything. The box was so big when compared to the small piece of cake that it fell and all the topping was in the box. Shocking. Java Lounge prices are brought day light robbery given what you get for what the price you have to pay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
