Colombo has an exciting new fast food contender - Korean Barbecue in Ethul Kotte (next to Rama’s Tea House) is a part of a new building that’s only just come up. There’s a shopping outlet downstairs and it looks like Baristas are on their way here too.
The place is well cut off from the road with a large garden and a drive way that leads to the car park at the back. From the car park there’s a flight of stairs which leads you to the little fast food shack upstairs. The first thing I saw when I walked in was a karaoke machine in the corner, it was so out of place that I couldn’t help but burst out laughing. Way to stay true to the Korean theme.
The restaurant has the cleanliness of something foreign, and I suppose the name implies that it is. It’s a typical fast food joint you’d find abroad or at an airport; a much smaller, quieter place to eat rather than the KFC across the road or the Mc Donald’s in Rajagiriya.
The chicken, without a doubt, is the best I’ve had in Sri Lanka. The batter had a satisfying crispiness to it and the chicken; oh my god the chicken was really good. Their secret is they cut off the chicken skin - it’s advertised all over their walls. It may be a bit too early to know for sure, but (hopefully) KFC will have some decent competition.
I ordered 3 pieces of chicken (Rs. 290) and some sort of Korean achcharu called kimchi for 100 rupees. The kimchi was a bit of a waste really, I ordered it not knowing what to expect. It’s a bit sour; it will go better with something other than just fried chicken.
Apart from the fried chicken (and the fire chicken), they’ve also got some Korean dishes up on the menu: Shinramyeon noodles, JaJangmyeon, chicken bokeum and chicken bulgogi. We’ll have some updates on these soon, hopefully from a Korean standpoint.
The prices are cheaper than KFC and delivery is free. Crazily though, they don’t do burgers or french fries so that’s a bit of a negative. Hopefully they’ll introduce a more things to the menu as time goes on. There are also rumors of a pub coming to the rooftop – should be good, it’ll be overlooking the Boardwalk
and the Diyawanna Lake.
