KBQ Korean Barbecue

Jinadasa Niyathapala Mawatha, Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte

KBQ has an all new spot in Jana Jaya building, and they do some good fried chicken and noodles, with a Korean twist.

Colombo has an exciting new fast food contender - Korean Barbecue in Ethul Kotte (next to Rama’s Tea House) is a part of a new building that’s only just come up. There’s a shopping outlet downstairs and it looks like Baristas are on their way here too.

The place is well cut off from the road with a large garden and a drive way that leads to the car park at the back. From the car park there’s a flight of stairs which leads you to the little fast food shack upstairs. The first thing I saw when I walked in was a karaoke machine in the corner, it was so out of place that I couldn’t help but burst out laughing. Way to stay true to the Korean theme.

The restaurant has the cleanliness of something foreign, and I suppose the name implies that it is. It’s a typical fast food joint you’d find abroad or at an airport; a much smaller, quieter place to eat rather than the KFC across the road or the Mc Donald’s in Rajagiriya.

The chicken, without a doubt, is the best I’ve had in Sri Lanka. The batter had a satisfying crispiness to it and the chicken; oh my god the chicken was really good. Their secret is they cut off the chicken skin - it’s advertised all over their walls. It may be a bit too early to know for sure, but (hopefully) KFC will have some decent competition.

I ordered 3 pieces of chicken (Rs. 290) and some sort of Korean achcharu called kimchi for 100 rupees. The kimchi was a bit of a waste really, I ordered it not knowing what to expect. It’s a bit sour; it will go better with something other than just fried chicken.

Apart from the fried chicken (and the fire chicken), they’ve also got some Korean dishes up on the menu: Shinramyeon noodles, JaJangmyeon, chicken bokeum and chicken bulgogi. We’ll have some updates on these soon, hopefully from a Korean standpoint.

The prices are cheaper than KFC and delivery is free. Crazily though, they don’t do burgers or french fries so that’s a bit of a negative. Hopefully they’ll introduce a more things to the menu as time goes on. There are also rumors of a pub coming to the rooftop – should be good, it’ll be overlooking the Boardwalk and the Diyawanna Lake.

TIP

Their fire chicken is popular

This is my second time visiting KBQ due to the fact that KBQ consists of a menu which differ from the rest of the restaurants in Rajagiriya. Food is decent and a different experience for the Sri Lankan taste buds.
However all our excitement ends with an unpleasant service provided by the KBQ staff which also ended our wonderful evening with a bitter ending. All our orders were delayed unreasonably, even though we didn’t complaint at the beginning we had to complain the staff at the end since the last order was delaying us getting home. We had to go to the place where the waiter stood since he didn’t come towards our table, when we asked him to expedite the order he started to question our rights since for his unfortunate there were other customers’ front of us when we complained. The same waiter called few off his colleagues to make a scene out of our complain. Before things get heated up we decided to settle the bill and withdrawing from the location without making an incident due to an uneducated staff. After we settled the bill and was coming out of the parking lot a delivery boy from the KBQ who was riding one of the delivery bike started to threaten me stating that my friend who complained should have shut his mouth. Due to our colleagues generosity we collectively decided to leave the place without making an incident.
With utter disappointment I have to state this in a public post ‘which is the first time in my career’, KBQ management should be more sensitive with how they treat their customers. We don’t come to your restaurant to have food for free. We did pay for whatever we ordered. As per consumer law you can’t ask a customer to shut up when he/she is complaining about a poor service. I could have sued your organization for what have you done today which I’m not bothered.
To whom consider to visit KBQ, I rate 1 out of 10.

The staff is really friendly and helpful, they even let you taste food before ordering if you haven't tried korean food before. But the service is kind of slow

This place needs some serious upgrades. Nothing feels clean, service is slow. Chicken was fine but most of the other dishes were nothing to write home about. Saw a rat running outside the premises.

Checked out the place last night after reading the review and I have to say I liked the food very much. The portions were big and the prices were quite affordable. We had a Janggeumi and Shinramyeon which were 500 and 350 respectively. Definitely going again.
