Lion Pub

220 Galle Road, Mount Lavinia

The Lion Pub has the best entrance of any bar in Colombo and really cheap beer and good food in large portions

The Lion Pub is one of a Mount Lavinia's oldest food establishments, and has since become somewhat of a landmark. It may not be as popular as it was back in the day, but the food is surprisingly good, the portions are generous and the atmosphere is perfect for a cool Lion lager.

The Food

The Lion Pub serves up some happiness inducing Sri Lankan Chinese fare. The prices are also incredibly cheap for the massive portions they serve up. We'd suggest going with a group of around four because even the small portions are way too much for two. You can easily manage for around Rs. 700 per head with beer. The food is mostly Sri Lankan Chinese, but this is actually one of the few oldies that still does it really well.

You can't go a to a place named the Lion Pub and not have a Lion lager (Rs. 250). They've got a pretty comprehensive beverage menu, all of it priced as low as you'll probably find.

For rice, we went with their simplest option- the egg and onion fried rice (Rs. 570 for S). We actually really liked this one since it didn't have too many veges, instead you get a good amount of onion for added texture. The rice isn't basmati but still worked very well with the rest of the dishes we ordered.

The double fried pork (Rs. 570 for S) was a solid iteration of the classic devilled pork. I'm a huge fan of fatty pork, so this one was right up my alley. The good thing, however, is the fact that there was a great balance of heat, pepper and seasoning though it does come with quite a lot of onions and green chillies.

The hot butter cuttlefish (Rs. 590 for S) was also decent but not one of the best we've had. The cuttlefish was actually cooked fine, but the batter was just a bit too thick. That being said, it works well as a bite to have along with a beer.

The best dish we tried though, was the Singapore chilli crab (560 for S). We looked at the price and assumed it would be a small portion, but what we got was easily enough for four and then some. It also tasted really great with just the right amount of sweetness and chilli in the almost glaze like sauce, with the crab being cooked to the point where you could crush the shell and easily get all the meat.

Ambience & Service

As far as iconic entrances go, you'd be hard-pressed to find one that can rival that of the Lion Pub with their lion head.  The interior is very simple with wooden furniture and white walls. They've also got an outdoor seating area under the shade of a very large bamboo tree.

You'll likely find a few old gents having a few cold ones and catching up on some cricket.

Service at the Lion Pub was actually ridiculously fast. The waiters have this really nonchalant attitude but their actually very efficient.

Conclusion

The Lion Pub is a classic, and a good one at that. If you're looking for a place to meet up with some friends, grab some beers and bites to eat, the Lion Pub fits the bill perfectly.

Went to Arthur's Pizza and had the chance to check the Lion's Pub outdoor dining area. Thought it would be the ideal place to throw a birthday party. Worst decision ever.
We went there 7th April 2017 around 8pm. And the disappointment began when they kept refusing to put two tables together so all 7 of us could sit together. After they kept on insisting how difficult it was, we went ahead and said we would do it for you if you could at least let us (since the place was hardly crowded) and only then they offered a hand.
So after that bad impression, we started ordering. The young waiter was of course friendly and attentive. The 'Long Island's were somewhat ok. But the mixed grill we ordered with it was like charcoal with oil. Perhaps the grill was out of order so they probably used an incinerator instead.
We wanted the mixed seafood noodles less spicy but it came just as spicy. Then we ordered another and it was the same. Then finally we asked them to bring it without making it spicy at all. The battered prawn was a silver lining fortunately.
One of us ordered a mutton koththu with cheese. However we found that it had no cheese at all. When we inquired they said they had forgotten and brought a dish of grated cheese separately. Seriously?
And another one of us ordered an extra beer and it was taking ages and seemed like it wasn't coming at all. Then we saw our waiter idling and found out he's actually forgotten it.
We went their with high hopes and I knew my friends didn't complain because they didn't want to me to feel embarrassed. I would still go to Arthur's but Lion's Pub, I won't even recommend to my worst enemy. It was nowhere near worthed the 15000LKR plus bill.

Their hot butter cuttle fish is some of the best around, and for the most reasonable of prices. But two of those and you'll be set to drink around 3 pitchers of beer. Tip the waiters well, though, my friends. If you don't, they won't serve you very well the next time you go there.
