Maharaja Palace

Maharaja Palace is one of the few fine dining Indian restaurants in Colombo. The prices are high but the portions are actually quite large now. Their food was always pretty good and it seems they've made some necessary improvements.

Maharaja Palace is an authentic north Indian restaurant located opposite Royal College.

Maharaja Palace. The recently opened authentic north Indian restaurant opposite Royal College used to be home to one of Colombo’s niche Chinese Restaurants, Hong Kong Orient. The former restaurant space looked vastly different to what it is now; the walls had the occasional streak of mould and the building as a whole sort of looked like it was going to collapse.

Maharaja Palace has gone for a major refurb and redesign of the building. Most of the walls have been broken down and the separate rooms have been combined to create a large open dining space (also check out the impressive kitchen if you can - its enormous). The restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere - opulent decor gently underscored by light flute music playing in the background, and their rich, creamy curries match the general theme of decadence.

After speaking to the very friendly chef, we ordered a meat platter (Rs. 2300 - serves 3) and some naan (Rs. 250). The food took some time to prepare but once it finally came it was excellent. The platter consisted of various meats off the menu – few pieces of chicken hazarvi kabab, prawns koliwada, chicken tikka, mutton seekh kebab, and fish haryali tikka. The prawns koliwada were dry, crunchy and flavourful - they did a great job of balancing the spices and preserving the taste of the actual prawn. The chicken and fish haryali tikka – chunks of bright red chicken and delicious creamy tender fish. The best of the platter was the mutton seekh kebab - tender, juicy strips of melt in your mouth meat.

All of that meat accompanied by a heavy cheese naan, makes for a whole hearty meal. We tried their homemade kulfi ice cream (Rs. 450) for dessert, which was again good. They have both plain and pistachio (I'm partial to the pistachio).

In sum, Maharaja Palace is a good new place for some good old Indian. The prices are a bit steep but the portions are generous.

TIP

They don't really mention it much but they have quite an impressive selection of wines, and even a bar at the back.

Dont usually review restaurants but its best to warn others not to waste their time and money at such an unprofessional establishment with unacceptable service standards (especially manager Kevin Cock). This is the first and last time we will visit Maharaja Palace. Recommend to visit Maharaja palace if you want to have ok food with a really bad & rude service with an overall unpleasant experience!!! Also the staff do not know of the promotions being run, nor do they know how to speak professionally… Plus they dont seem to have any clue of portion sizes of their own restaurant…

Probably one of the best Indian restaurants in Colombo. The food was great, and the service was really good. Chilled ambience, good for a family dinner. Make sure you reserve a table in advance.

I've been here so many times from the day they opened and the food has been consistently good. The prices really aren't that bad considering you're paying for dishes that can be shared amongst 2-3 people per portion. Their mutton biriyani is easily the best in colombo and the staff are attentive and polite. Overall this is a very good restaurant to have a very good Indian meal
