Malay Restaurant

115 Hill Street, Dehiwela

Malay Restaurant in Dehiwala is hugely popular, and after trying our their stuff we can see why. The portions: massive, the flavours: excellent and the prices: reasonable.

This is Dehiwala at street level. Malay Restaurant is a small eatery that's somewhere between a restaurant and a hole in the wall food stop. True to its name it serves up a comprehensive selection of Malay food - which in Sri Lanka means lots of meat, particularly beef, offal, and sea food.

The dishes - while not cheap by street food standards - are fresh, rich and tasty. The secret is the meaty broth/stock which is kept bubbling for hours and reduces into a delicious base for all your favorite curries.Their range of beef curries (Rs. 300-400) is reliably tasty, as are the generous plates of prawn pepper curry and cuttle fish in peanut sauce.

There are some Malaysian/Indonesian staples on the menu - like Ikan Masak Lemak -  chilli padi fish in coconut sauce, and Ayam Goreng Asam - fried chicken in tamarind. But the real specialties here are Sri Lankan Malay classics - babath (tripe curry), fried brain cutlets, and hot spleen curry. While a lot of people have an irrational aversion to offal, well prepared organ meat can be delicious, and the Malay Restaurant does a great job making the insides of animals a delicacy.

For more conservative eaters there's a wide and reliable range of biryani, satay and other non-innard based tastiness. It's all really quite tasty and good value. While some people are hesitant to wander into Colombo's hole in the wall eateries, Malay Restaurant is a good introduction to Lankan street food. However, it's a bit of a soft intro as it also feature a scrupulously clean and air conditioned dining area, somehow crammed into the small space behind the shop front. Take away and delivery still seem to be preferred by most patrons.

TIP

The prices on the menu actually include taxes so you're only going to be charged service charge.

The lamprais is my fav but lately the rice portion is small and dry. Adding a gravy and some extras would be better for a taste bud.

Malay Restaurant used to be our favourite quick dine in spot until recently.
Their food is still great but their service has dropped so low. 2nd time in a row experiencing it. There is a new server who unfortunately was assigned to my table twise. This is is more about giving u all the signals to leave…and yesterday even bluntly to our face to leave, even after placing a real straight forward order. saying the kitchen is busy…he said the same the last time round. We went in about 9 pm…gave an order of a large portion mixed seafood fried rice and a portion of Masala chicken.
he takes the order and tells us he cannot give us our food anytime till 9. 40pm. that the kitchen is very busy with catering order. so we either wait or leave. Basically nothing from the kitchen would come before that to us so even an appetiser is out.
The restaurant was not fully packed…his reasoning was a catering order.
Any who we said well might as well leave cus that's too late. he just said ok…and was real quick to take back the menu and set the table again…signalling us to get up asap and leave!
While was making a complaint to a senior and older staff, there were a few other customers expressing concerns about the same thing.
real lame. May be hire better people who are not rude and know how your restaurant functions.
being going to Malay Restaurant for more than 12 years…even when they were dingy…will certainly not be doing so anymore.
It just take one rotten apple to spoil the lot!
