Meringue

110D, Galle Road, Dehiwala

Meringue is a tiny little new bakery in Dehiwala run by a small group of folks. Their sweets are pretty good, but they need to offer more in terms of selection and probably have meringues in there as well.

The Food

A few weeks prior to their opening, Meringue managed to create quite a bit of buzz by teasing people by posting some good looking photos of cheesecakes and what not. So when they eventually opened their doors on the 23rd of January, we dropped in to see if they could match the expectation with the reality. One are that was lacking was the selection with a only a few cakes to choose from that day, also seeing as how their name is Meringue, they should probably have meringues available. Presentation-wise they didn't look as good as the photos on facebook, but when it came down to the flavour it was quite nice. Prices are on par with other contemporary bakeries with a slices of cake ranging between Rs. 350 - Rs. 500.

We first tried a slice of their fruit cocktail cake (Rs. 390). All in all we enjoyed this one, but we felt the cake itself was just a bit too dry and the fruits could have been a bit more varied. The frosting on the other hand, was spot on, with the right texture and sweetness, which in turn helped with the lack of moistness of the cake.

They also offered us a few complimentary mini cupcake (since it was their opening day), which turned out to be pretty great. In this case the mini cupcakes were moist and well baked, with the simple butter cream completing the bite sized confection perfectly.

We were in a bit of a rush, so we grabbed our blueberry cheesecake (Rs. 450) to go. This was a bit different from the other blueberry cheesecakes because the topping was very thin, but still had a adequate blueberry flavour and sweetness. The cheesecake was also good with a soft and creamy texture, but the biscuit base was just a bit too crumbly. Not bad at all for a first day.

Ambience & Service

The interior of Meringue isn't too well optimized in terms of space. The kitchen takes up half the floor area so that leaves very little space for seating. They've got two small couches and a table, with some ill-advised bar stools in front of the counter which take way too much space. With this set up they can only accommodate around 10 people, so for the time being we'd suggest getting their cakes to go.

We had no complaints about the service, which was fast and friendly. One of the owners was at the counter on that day and he seemed quite open to criticism, getting feedback from the customers.

Conclusion

Meringue only just began their foray into the local bakery scene. Their first impression was not too bad, hopefully they can sort out their seating and add a bit more variety to their menu in the future.
