Nelum Kole

Off Lake Road, Boralesgamuwa

Nelum Kole is a rice-and-curry kade in Boralesgamuwa that provides a convenient and cost-effective lunch spread.

In the vicinity of Boralesgamuwa, there's no greater spot for buth, than the ever so popular Nelum Kole.
With a gigantic spread of meats and curries that you can possibly think of, they've been in the rice & curry scene for quite some time now, and are consistently good at it. They also have a separate stand of fried rice, nasi goreng and the likes.
Our recent visit to this place happened just a couple of days ago, and we were glad to see how they have improved. A revamped look, bigger and better space, and of course, more curries to choose from!

Rice & Curry

Each rice packet/plate can be accompanied by four veg curries, and comes with fried red chillies and papadums.

Priced at a whopping Rs. 510, we got the Mutton Rice & Curry with dambala (winged beans) curry, polos (young jackfruit) curry, kiri ala (taro) curry and some cabbage leaves mallum

All of the curries were prepared excellently. Well curried up with a tinge of sourness, the polos curry was particularly good. There were a couple of boney, gristly bits in the mutton curry, but taste-wise, it was incredible.

The kiri ala and dambala curries helped to dial down the spiciness of the above two, by adding a milky note, while the mallum gave a fresh crunch.

We served ourselves a Prawn Rice & Curry (Rs. 400) with dal curry, tempered ash plantain, kos mallum and tempered long beans.

Nelum Kole doesn't crowd your plate with a heap of rice, which is something I really appreciate. Instead, they offer generous helpings of curries.

The prawn curry was spicy, and had some fat, juicy, plump-y prawns. I loved the addition of red chillies in the kos mallum, as it made the whole thing extra savoury.

The tempered ash plantains at the Nelum Kole is a must try, if you wish to have some sweet and spicy kick. The tempered long beans were good as well.

We would've preferred a little more curry taste in the dal curry though, as it was kinda too milky.

Priced at Rs. 320, this portion of Pork curry didn't quite live up to our expectations. It had been infused with a good amount of spices for sure, but it was full of fatty bits, and just a few meaty pieces. Plus, the potion was quite tiny.

Ambience & Service

It's a well-kept eatery, with rustic decor, earthy walls and a thatched roof, which adds up to the local village home-like vibe. The rice & curry spread is now covered with plastic shields, and the staff was geared up with face masks.

Conclusion

Nelum Kole is still growing strong! We're not too happy about the increased prices, but they still do a solid job at crafting up some delicious rice & curry plates.

TIP

If you want to try the fried stuff, go early. Say by noon.
