Palmyrah (Hotel Renuka)

328, Hotel Renuka, Galle Road, Colombo 3

Palmyrah has long been one of the best places in the city for Sri Lankan food. They've expanded well into Western and Indian too, the food is great, and it's also a comfy, quiet, chilled space to dine at.

For the past decade or so, Palmyrah by Hotel Renuka has been a reliable option to indulge in Sri Lankan delicacies, despite the hefty price tag. We recently paid them a visit and were quite happy to discover that they are still consistent with the quality and flavours of their food.

Food & Drinks

Aside from Sri Lankan food, Palmyrah also does a range of Indian-style dishes, a few Western and Asian. You can simply opt for a glass of fresh juice, milkshake, or coffee, and even liquor on the side of your meal.

The complimentary Rasam was fantastic. Spicy and sour, but with a sweet kick, it's a nice way to stimulate your tastebuds before a good meal. As our appetiser, we got the Roti Savoury (Rs. 700). It comes as a portion of two chapati rotis stuffed with a savoury and tangy beef filling. They have used minced beef here, along with chunks of onions, tomatoes and herbs. Simple, but wonderful. This serving of fluffy, aromatic Saffron Rice (Rs. 460) is easily enough to feed two hungry adults. It's more of a kaha buth, really, but a delicious one at that. To pair it up, we ordered some Isso Thel Daala (Rs. 1400), Dal Curry (Rs. 520) and Seeni Sambol (Rs. 400).
I love dal curry. It's probably my favourite veg curry. And this dal curry at Palmyrah is one of the best I've had. Well-infused with thick coconut milk, it had a rich, milky gravy, and a lot of curry flavour. With about ten fat, deshelled prawns, the Isso Thel Daala included a good amount of chilli powder, chilli flakes, and green chillies, spicing things up. The curry leaves worked their magic here, while the addition of tomato gave it a slight tangy kick.
The Seeni Sambol helped to dial down the spiciness, by being a sweet delight.

All the portions here are made for two people. Unfortunately, we weren't aware of it when we placed the order, and did the mistake of ordering more food - Butter Chicken Masala (Rs. 1000) and Chapati Roti (Rs. 350, comes with 3 nos).
However, it was a delicious mistake. The only thing we regret is the fact that we couldn't finish it up, as we were so full from eating rice.

The Butter Chicken Masala was simply incredible. With a gravy that's rich, creamy and gooey, it presented an elegant, red-orangey hue. Honestly, it's enough testament to how tasty this curry is. There were about five sizable pieces of chicken, soaking up all that flavour in the gravy.

The Chapati rotis were a bit dry and quite small, but we didn't mind as the butter chicken masala did an incredible job in providing all the moisture they need.

We were happy with the Chocolate Milkshake (Rs. 550). It had the right milk-to-ice cream ratio, which created a well-balanced flavour profile.

The Lime Soda (Rs. 510) was a tad too sour for our liking, but still, absolutely refreshing.

Ambience & Service

Located in the basement of Hotel Renuka, Palmyrah's dining space is ample. They seem to have been consistent in maintaining their ambience too, as nothing has changed from what we experienced during our last review; clean, neat and absolutely comfy. It's quite ideal for business lunches, family dinners and even casual dates.

The service was excellent as always. Well-versed, polite and helpful.

Conclusion

Palmyrah is a pricy option for Sri Lankan/Indian cuisine in Colombo. However, we really do appreciate the fact that they're still delivering the same good flavours that we've had the pleasure of indulging in for many years. Once again, we recommend!

The good old Palmyrah is still consistent with their flavours.

Palmyrah is one of the places we 'd recommend twice over for their authentic food and great service.

Palmyrah has long been one of the best places in the city for - Sri Lankan food. A cuisine type which, quite bafflingly, is massively underrepresented in the capital of Sri Lanka.

Today my family and I went to The Palmyrah restaurant at Hotel Renuka. There was no one to usher us in to the restaurant. Nobody showed us to a table although there were plenty of staff around. We were there for a good 10 mins before we recieved menus although I was gesturing and calling the staff throughout. They blatantly ignored us. When we finally gave our orders we waited for almost an hour for us to get our food. I got the fillet steak. Boy, was it one of the worst steaks I've ever had. It was like chewing beef soup flavoured rubber. Fortunately my family's dishes were alright. To make matters worse we were only given glasses and water after we received the food. The napkins we had to tale from another table. Absolutely, absurd. Terrible service and sub par food. I used to recommend this place highly. There was barely anyone today and still they messed it up right royally.

Great for their hoppers. Slightly on the higher side price wise compared to cafe on the 5th.
