Park Street Mews Restaurant

50/1 Park Street, Colombo 2

Park Street Mews Restaurant is one of those select few that have managed to remain relevant and maintain high standards throughout the years. They haven't changed much at all, but we're fine with that since the food is excellent, the service is fast and the unorthodox setting is still quite chic.

The new Park Street Mews Restaurant has an interesting but average food down perhaps the nicest little commercial strip in Colombo.

Park Street Mew Restaurants, a Harpo's joint, is a great place with OK food. It's recently been extensively renovated, making it smaller and whitewashed within an inch of its life. The whole Mews area is a great place for events and increasingly for shopping and Park Street Mews remains one of the most urbane spots in town.

The Food

The new Mews has a very interesting menu and some of the best plating we've seen in the city, but the food we tried just wasn't that tasty. It's all quite palatable, but not as great as you'd expect from the way the dishes look and sound. We tried a ravioli with chorizo (Rs. 600) which looked amazing but tasted a bit plasticky and store-bought. Not bad in any sense, but not that good.

Also tried a pineapple chicken and cheese and onion tart from the specials, both of which looked better than they tasted. The chicken was underseasoned and the tart seemed like it had just been assembled in layers, not actually baked together. Again, all palatable food, but not great.

The drinks are also OK. Tried a mint passion cooler (Rs. 250) and a vanilla frappe (Rs. 300). They were fine.

The Location

The Mews as a complex remains a great location. Cobblestones outsides, shops and often art outside, ample parking out back, it's one of the best spots in Colombo. The redesign of the signature restaurant has made room for another shop next door and you don't really find the space missing so much, there's still plenty of seating.

We're not entirely fans of the new interior decoration, though perhaps that's a matter of taste. Bamboo divides an already divided space further and it's all pretty aggressively whitewashed. Again, a matter of taste. It's comfortable enough, and in a good neighborhood.

The Service

The place was not busy at all and the service is generally quite good.

Conclusion

The new Park Street Restaurant doesn't necessarily improve on the old one, but it doesn't take much away. Still a workmanlike restaurant in one of Colombo's few good neighborhoods.

TIP

Explore the shops and cobblestone street nearby. Oh and they actually have a decent WiFi connection.

No vegetarian mains on the menu. Went there the first time and sent the owner a message. Response from Harpo was, “did you look at the menu?” . So assumed that veg mains had been added but second time too, no veg mains on the menu. To date nothing! Terrible bland food. I guess this place only caters to white foreigners. We were a group of 14 the next time we dined there and the unanimous vote was that the place was awful!
