Pasta Hut

285/1/c Stanley Thilakarathne Mawatha, Nugegoda

Pasta Hut is an Italian restaurant and pizzeria in Nugegoda of all places, near the Jubilee Post junction. It does surprisingly good ravioli and pasta and pizzas (we assume, haven't tried them yet). The location is a bit noisy and uncomfortable for dine-in but we recommend them for delivery or take-away.

Pasta Hut is an Italian restaurant and pizzeria in Nugegoda of all places, near the Jubilee Post junction. It does surprisingly good ravioli and pasta and pizzas (we assume, haven't tried them yet). Nugegoda is not Colombo's Little Italy, but it does have a surprisingly good Italian Restaurant. The somewhat unoriginally named Pasta Hut serves up some pretty good pasta and ravioli and - after 5 o'clock - pizza. According to a Sunday Times article posted on the wall, the owner - Mapalagamage Thushara Sanjeevani - started the restaurant after a decade working in Italy.

Quality

Sri Lankan restaurants traditionally massacre pasta, but Pasta Hut actually does it quite well. We tried a carbonara with shrimp (not traditional) for Rs. 450 and ravioli for Rs. 750. Both were quite good. Not necessarily authentic Italian, but good. The carbonara was made with penne (also not traditional) but was flavorful and not too creamy or heavy. The ravioli was stuffed with greens and carried the light tomato flavor that Italian food is known for.

One definitely non-traditional dish is their lunchtime fried rice, but everyone has to serve rice. It's quite flavorful if a bit lacking in chicken.

All the dishes we tried we really quite good and we've heard good recommendations of the place from friends. They only serve pizza from 5:00 PM to 10:30 PM so we'll update on that when we order again.

Location

Unless you live in Nugegoda, Nugegoda is really far. That said, we don't recommend dining in. The street is noisy, the place is hot and when we went there was a rather strong smell of dry fish coming from the shop next door. They do 45 minute delivery within Colombo city limits for Rs. 100-200 and we'd recommend that. If you're in Nuge take-away isn't a bad option.

Service

Our experience was just with the guys at the counter but they were plenty nice. Sinhala speaking, so keep that in mind when you order.

Conclusion

Pasta Hut produces good if not entirely authentic Italian food in Nugegoda. Authentic isn't everything and the cooking is well adapted to both available ingredients and Sri Lankan tastes. We recommend it for delivery or take-away.

TIP

The ravioli is pretty good. They serve pizza only after 5 PM.

Address

285/1/c Stanley Thilakarathne Mawatha, Nugegoda

Directions

From Nugegoda, take the road under the flyover into town past the Nugegoda Supermarket as it becomes Pagoda Road. At a place called the Meat Market the road forks, go right onto Stanley Tillekerathne Mw. About 200m before the road ends there's a small lane which leads to a Hotel School. It's at the top of that road.
