Pedlar's Gelato is one of the places in Galle Fort that everyone knows about. Like Rocket Burgers, Pedlar's is quite popular. Nestled next to the pizzeria, they serve gelato and 'spaghetti ice cream.'
They've got a selection of fruity flavours, including non-fruity stuff like coffee and caramel. Served in waffle cones, each scoop comes up to Rs. 250.
A friend who was with me had tried the caramel before and was waxing eloquent about it, so we picked that. True to reputation, it was intensely creamy, but not as flavoursome as it was when he'd had it just a few weeks ago.
The caramel flavour wasn't evenly spread, with it being limited to the sauce-like bits interspersed in the ice-cream; and which the plain bits barely had any flavour.
We've been eyeing the ice-cream spaghetti, so we bought that next. It's Rs. 650 a portion, and comes in three flavours of your choice. We picked banana, lime, and coffee. Strange combination, yes.
What's even stranger is how it's served: the scoops of ice cream are literally put through a contraption which squeezes it out into spaghetti formation. So you're literally eating squished ice cream. And three scoops is a large amount for one person.
Flavourwise, the coffee was bland/ almost tasteless. The lime was super tangy and acidic, with a lot of flavour. It was great! The banana didn't have any flavour either, it was a bit like iced water. Which is weird. Either way, it's better value for money than buying 3 separate scoops of gelato.
They ask if you'd like the sauce on top of it. Avoid if you dislike intensely sour/ overpowering add-ons.
The stall is manned by one person, which makes it pretty difficult for him to handle crowds. And by crowds I mean more than three people. It would have been more efficient and less frustrating if they had more staff, but the guy behind the counter was nice and clearly doing the best he could.
There's a bench outside which is the recommended seating option should you want to hang around and soak in some Galle Fort sunshine while enjoying your gelato. There's a dim little seating area upstairs which is comfortably furnished — but the toilet is adjoining it and the smell is intolerable, so do avoid.
Pedlar's still does some good gelato, but it's not great as it used to be. Still, it's a Galle Fort staple - so don't miss out if you're in the hood.
Pedlar's Inn Gelato is a popular spot for warding off the sunny blues with ice cream. They've sadly declined in quality, though.
