Pedlar's Inn Gelato (Galle)

61, Pedlar Street, Galle Fort, Galle

Gelato down Pedlar's Street

Pedlar's Gelato has always been a popular watering hole for those parched and seeking the blessed, cold touch of ice cream.

They're still in the same place they've been in all these years and apart from a few furniture additions, nothing much has changed. Except for the quality of their ice creams.

The Gelato

*From top left: Mango, Pistachio, White Chocolate & Chocolate

After years of having heard of this place and recommendations galore, we settled on the Pistachio, White Chocolate, Mango and Double Chocolate ice creams, each costing us Rs. 250.

  • I'll start with the worst one: Mango. I don't know what it was honestly save for a scoop of ice cream that tasted like literally nothing with just the slightest whisper of mango essence coming through. Sort of like a faded, mango mirage I'd say. The colour wasn't very alluring either, and it looked more like the deceased carcass of a mango ice cream as opposed to the vibrant, lively counterpart you could buy at any store. Oy vey.

  • The Pistachio is good, don't get me wrong, but it was loaded with flavouring to the point where it tastes synthetic. This isn't a bad thing, but I couldn't quite stomach the perfume-y taste although one of my friends seemed to enjoy it immensely. Depends on how you like your flavour, really.

  • The White Chocolate, again, was devoid of flavour at first bite but as I kept digging in I discovered that it built up to a pleasant, oreo taste. I'm guessing that at this point my tastebuds were frozen on account of all the ice cream but after a sip of water and a re-taste, it was actually quite good. Light, with minuscule chocolate chips and a nice, creamy consistency I'd recommend this one if none of the other flavours tickle your fancy.

  • Finally, the best out of the lot had to be the Double Chocolate. It was heavy, rich, gooey and exploded with chocolate. We loved it. The best part was it wasn't a synthetic, milky chocolate but rather a nice powerful dark chocolate flavour. Get this one.

Service & Ambience

The guy over the counter is pretty efficient and really considerate. Despite our feeble requests for cups instead of cones, we were handed two waffle cones which we then sheepishly asked to be put into cups for convenience (we were laden with heavy bags and a bus to catch back home). He didn't bat an eye and immediately complied which was great.

The ambience isn't anything to sing with delight about. Just Galle being Galle. Well, that area at least. There are little tables and chairs you can sit at and an upstairs area which we didn't have the time to visit. Lots of couples, families and tourists stop here.

Conclusion

Sadly, Pedlar's Gelato wasn't as promising as the hype built it out to be. At least for me. If I've upset any fanatics then I'd like a serving of their original stuff so I can judge, but otherwise this is how it went.
DO try the chocolate ice cream though, it was delicious.

The best Ice cream I have ever had. All natural ingredients imported from Italy according to mike, the the Italian guy who makes the ice cream.
My favourite being the Lemon flavour and the hazel nut.
Worth the drive from Colombo.

Love the black cherry and the pistachio! I'd take a trip to Galle just for this gelato, it's so good. They indulgently provide testers no matter how many you ask, since it is so difficult to make up your mind to choose just one! However they do run out quite fast and close shop at odd times to restock :(
