At the moment, Playtrix is working on getting their liquor licence and therefore, they're not selling any alcohol. However, they allow you to bring your own drank for a corkage fee - Rs. 2500 for foreign liquor, Rs. 1500 for local ones, and Rs. 500 for beer per litre (3 normal cans). Also, they wipe out one corkage fee for every Rs. 5000 you spend. Meaning, if you spend Rs. 10000, you can bring 2 bottles free! [Ed Note: now they serve liquor. BYOB isn't allowed].
To pair them with, they do a range of bites and mains. We opted for a plate of Buffalo Wings (Rs. 800), Cheese Toast with Kochchi and Bacon (Rs. 800), and the Mixed Grill (Rs. 2800).
Served with a helping of Buffalo sauce, the wings were awesome. With a little crisp to its outside, produced from the perfect frying, the meat had a lovely smokey aroma. The buttery, zesty and piping hot sauce made us keep going at it, one bite after another.
I'm a massive fan of Kochchi Cheese Toast - particularly the one I had at The Embazzy. Playtrix's take on this is plentiful with bacon bits, embedded in a generous slathering of mozzarella.
Probably because they've chopped it into very tiny pieces, we couldn't quite get the spicy flavour of the kochchi, but we really didn't mind, as the bacon worked its magic.
This plate contains around five slices of bread, cut in half. It's a lot, so make sure you share it with someone.
The Mixed Grill was heavily laden with two strips of bacon, two fillets of chicken, two eggs (sunny side up), one chicken sausage, one pork sausage, one beef fillet, one pork tenderloin, corn on the cob, and a side salad. It also comes with the sides of in-house made mustard sauce and a sweet sauce made with bits of plum, date and dried apple.
Considering the quantity and the quality of their execution, this is well worth it. Each cut of meat had just the right touch from the grill, was incredibly juicy and easily cut through. They've kept the seasoning to a minimum, which encouraged the meat to boast its rich flavours without any interruption.
Playtrix may not have any alcoholic stuff at the moment, but they do offer a range of non-alcoholic beverages. Our Chocolate Milkshake (Rs. 750) had a good blend of milk and chocolate ice cream, in a very balanced manner. Minty, limey and very refreshing, the Virgin Mojito (Rs. 800) was delicious too. However, almost Rs. 1000 price tags do not quite justify them.
With TVs in every corner in the room, and a giant screen to rule them all, Playtrix plays different sports encounters. If that doesn't interest you, there's also the chance to enjoy a foosball game of your own while sipping in your drink.
They have seating setups to every customer. A set of chairs around the bar for solo drinkers, comfy couches and tables for family and friends, and the balcony, if you prefer to have your drink with a cloud of smoke, while enjoying the view of Beira Lake.
Our bill took some time to arrive, but aside from that, the staff was quite efficient, supportive and friendly.
We've always liked our experience at the Playtrix, and this time around it was any different. The interior of the new location seems less packed, while the food is amazing as always, plus you get to catch up on your favourite games.
Playtrix is back - in an all-new location.
Playtrix is likely the best sports bar in Colombo right now, offering good value for money along with tasty food and cocktails.
Playtrix is the new sports bar at CR & FC, and it's a welcome change from the generic bars in Colombo. They've got more than 15 flat screen TVs showing any and all sports events happening around the world, with good food and a great atmosphere.
