Raja Bojun

Liberty Arcade, 282, R. A. De Mel Mawatha, Colombo 03

Raja Bojun is generally known for good Sri Lankan cuisine. They've moved from their old spot near Galle Face to a new location at the top of Liberty Arcade. The food is still good, so is the spread, though nothing amazing. We loved the seafood best.

Raja Bojun is perhaps the poshest rice and curry you can get in Colombo (besides Nuga Gama). They serve a comprehensive and tasty buffet for a heft Rs. 1,450 (lunch) or Rs. 1,650 (dinner). It's certainly more than a buth packet, but if you want a reliable taste of Sri Lankan cuisine, Raja Bojun won't lead you wrong.

Location

Raja Bojun is located in the back lobby of the Seylan Bank building (opposite the Cinnamon Grand Hotel). There's a bit of a sea view and some faux-rustic furnishings. Most people try the buffet at Raja Bojun but we tried the take-away, which is basically the same thing but pre-selected.

Quality

The rice and curry doesn't disappoint. The rice and fried rice are excellent, the chicken and fish good and the vegetables (pumpkin, purippu, beans, tempered potato) are fresh and good. They also include a bit of an innovation, a salad with olives, kidney beans and croutons. Not exactly traditional but it goes well. If you eat in at the buffet there are more options, including hoppers, kottu, malum, Malay pickle, etc. Our meal included apple slices and wattalapan for dessert. At the buffet you again have more options, and there's a drinks and arrack cocktail bar (costs extra).

The food is all very good and in good portions. We've had buth packets with good components, but everything at Raja Bojun is consistently better. Even the takeaway portions are served in individual containers, so it doesn't have the same what-you-see-is-what-you-get experience as a buth packet, you can mix and match to your taste. It's basically a really good buffet.

The difference, however, is that a meal at Raja Bojun is about 10X more expensive than what you'd get at your average kade on the street. If you're going out with tourists or for something special it may be worthwhile, but we wouldn't recommend this place for a casual office lunch. For special occasions, however, the Raja Bojun buffet is one of the best in town.

Once known for its great Sri Lankan fare, Raja Bojun now disappoints.
