Rama's Tea House (RIP)

935 Kotte Road, Ethul Kotte

Closed now. Rama's Tea House is a new... something in Battaramulla, near the Kotte Road turn-off. I saw something because it's a weird and not entirely satisfying mix of tea house and English pub.

Rama's Tea House is a strange mix between Cafe, Pub and Hogsmeade. You heard right. Hogsmeade. These guys serve Butter Beer. While this isn't The Hog's Head from your favourite childhood fantasy series they certainly use a bit of magic in dishing up some creative options in a setting so strange it might as well be in the Potter World.

The Food... & Beer

One thing you certainly won't miss when you walk in is the over abundance of signs declaring that they do Fish & Chips in "Traditional English Style" (Rs.695). The portion was filling and rich and comes with their own homemade tartar sauce. The fish had a good batter-to-fish ratio and my first bite resounded with a satisfying crunch. However, the fish was let down by the accompanying chips which weren't seasoned evenly; a few tasted bland, and a few others were too salty. The biggest draw back though was the tartar sauce which lacked the necessary bang.

On the contrary the tall glass of non alcoholic Butter Beer (Rs.350) was a blast. It had a creamy, smooth texture with faint hints of caramel. My advice is to let the beading bubbles burst gently against your mouth while you wait for your letter from Hogwarts.

Still waiting.
Anytime now.

By dessert I was stuffed and had little room for anything else, but I lingered on... for science. I had their homemade green tea ice cream (Rs.250). This was good. If you're tired of the hard, tough, sad excuse for ice cream you get at your local supermarket their homemade one is a good way to go with its soft, creamy texture. It did taste a little too sweet, though this could boil down to personal preference.

Their Ceylon Tea (Rs.200) which comes from their own estate was decent. You might enjoy this for your daily tea fix. Beware, however. I was disgusted when my sugar pot came with a complimentary live ant (a fairly large one at that.)

Ambience

This is where the place loses a lot of points. Like a rebellious teenager, Rama's Tea House isn't quite sure what it wants to be. It's got a pool table which is great if you want to bring your friends and relax, but at the same time it promotes a sort of bar-like-cafe-like vibe with its tea pots, and tea crates and jarring bar stools and counter. It's even starting to show a little wear and tear here and there (eg. cracked bathroom doors).

Service

Their saving grace is their efficiency. Dishes and drinks at all tables including mine were out in under five minutes. My fish & chips was at the table lightning fast, though this may vary depending on what you order. The waiters could have been a little bit more pleasant and attentive however. At one point they turned on the TV and began watching some cartoon which shattered whatever impression they had won with their efficiency.

Conclusion

The Tea House isn't a bad place, albeit it isn't a very good one. It's alright and scores a few points with its creativity. If you're ever passing Ethul Kotte Junction, drop by and get yourself a Butter Beer. It's worth your while.

TIP

Try the Tream Soda. It's like a cream soda, if you like that sort of sweetness.

Rama's Teahouse prides itself on serving Butterbeer and Fish and Chips.

Rama's Tea House is a what-cha-ma-call-it that serves up some creative and tasty dishes. Though our guess is as good as yours as to what the place actually is.

The place was filled with a repulsive smell which they tried to drown with air fresheners and it made the whole thing worse. Couldn't breathe after a while and we had to sit outside. Got a butterbeer which was fine but the overall experience was not great. Everything felt gloomy. I feel like they need a revamp. Also, stay away from the deep fried Mars bar.
