Rio Ice Cream (Jaffna)

448A, Point Pedro Rd, Jaffna

The original Rio Ice Cream parlour is old and sweet- it's persisted through decades of war and strife as an integral part of the local community. It's worth a diabetic shock or two to experience that.

Ah, the infamous Rio! Owning a history older than four whole decades, Rio is still a place that people flock to. One should not leave Jaffna without having a taste of Rio, because it's a ritual that everyone should fulfill.

I've had my fair share of Rio Ice Cream. I really can't remember the number of times I've been to Rio branches in Colombo (Wellawatte and Negombo), and a flavor that I haven't tried on their menu. But, still, I was quite excited to visit the original Rio in Jaffna, so here goes.

The Ice Cream

It's the same flavors as in Colombo (obviously!), so we ordered up a few classics - Fruit & Nut (Rs. 80), Rio Special (Rs. 300) and Blueberry Sundae (Rs. 200).

The Fruit & Nut was not so fruity or nutty as promised but came with a sprinkle of cashew nuts and dried fruits. Creamy and milky, its flavor was quite similar to the Elephant House Fruit & Nut Ice Cream, but more like a sweeter version of that.

The Rio Special was a hit. Served as a generous serving of two ice cream scoops -chocolate and vanilla, topped off with chocolate strawberry syrup and garnished with a few bits of cashew nuts, it didn't have the pebbles or chocolate chips as promised. But, still, it's a good one that you can easily share with someone (although I didn't).

The chocolate ice cream didn't boast a rich chocolatey flavor as one would expect, but the chocolate syrup made up for it somehow. Rio's ice creams are in fact extremely sugar-y, but surprisingly likable, and the vanilla ice cream here wasn't any exception. With the topping of strawberry syrup, its flavor was quite like the strawberry sundaes we find in our franchise restaurants (Burger King, McD's).

The Blueberry Sundae had a lush and buttery texture, loaded with violet coloring with a slight blueberry flavor seeping through. Drizzled with a helping of blueberry syrup, it had a teeny tiny sour taste swirling around, which was boosted by the syrup itself.

Service & Ambience

It's a two-storied building with a massive veranda out front, enough to accommodate around 200 - 250 people at a time, but still CANNOT manage with the crowd that they get every minute of every day. There're three counters that you can place your orders, but still, be prepare to stand in a long line if you wish to dine in.

The service wasn't all smiles but it was super fast though. Aside from these three, we ordered another four ice creams, altogether seven, and we got them all within around 5 minutes. Pretty impressive!

Conclusion

If you ever find yourself in Jaffna, do not forget to pay a visit to Rio. Yes, it's the same saccharine ice cream they serve in Colombo, and no, it's not the best ice cream on the island, but a trip to Jaffna is incomplete without a scoop from Rio. It's the experience that counts the most, not just the taste.
