Savoy Restaurant (Bar)

12 Savoy Building, Galle Road, Colombo 6

The Savoy Restaurant is a pretty good dodgy bar, situated just above the Savoy Cinema. It's a big space and in a relatively non-dodgy neighborhood, but with the same dodgy bar drink and food prices.

Devilled Sausages

Food And Drink

This is basic Sri Lankan bar fare. You're best to stick with the usual arrack and beer and french fries and deviled meats. We sadly forgot the prices, but they're not the same as other working class bars. You can have an excellent time for Rs. 500 a person.

We tried the usual Old Reserve (arrack) and soda, wherein you can't go wrong so long as the ice is cold. Which it was. For bites we had the french fries, which came liberally dosed with chili. They were quite good. We also had the deviled sausages. There was perhaps a total of two Keells sausages in there total, it was mostly capsicum and onions, but it was still pretty good.

There is nothing fancy here, the closest they get to a cocktail is putting lime in your coke and the food is not like tapas or anything. It's still pretty great for what it is.

Savoy Crowd

Ambiance

We like the Savoy Bar. It's above the cinema (you enter from a door a bit up from the cinema entrance) and it has good, crumbling architecture. The ceilings are high, the light is dim, the tablecloths are a deep and weathered red. It's a beautiful place, in its own way. They have TVs, usually showing news or cricket, and there are windows overlooking the sometimes loud street. It's a big space and can support a bit of a crowd.

Though the patrons are working class, they won't take too much notice of tourists or women.

Arrack And Ice

Service

Like most dodgy bars, the service is prompt and excellent. I don't know what it is about working class joints that makes the staff so much more attentive, but they are. You'll rarely wait too long for a drink or a bill. Do note that the staff can be quite busy at times.

Conclusion

This is the midrange of dodgy bars. On

TIP

The french fries are good. Stick to simple drinks like arrack and beer.

Used to be a frequent patron. Their signature side-dish (bite) is the "garlic-kankung". Have very good memories of this place/joint!!!

Yes, and they have more sophisticated drinks, like gin and tonic, or Scotch.
