Summer Garden on Green Path is a popular watering hole among men. It's not much for ambience, but they do some affordable, hearty meat dishes.
Summer Garden has been around for a while now, but nothing much has changed over the years. For a small place they've got a pretty good selection of dishes, with everything from pork, to ox, to seafood. One thing Summer Garden is well known for is their affordability and we experienced that first hand with the bill for 3 coming to only around Rs. 1900.
We tried out their gammon steak (Rs. 480), which you could say is one of their signature dishes. You get two pork steaks in a thick pepper sauce with fries, veges and a pineapple. The pork was cooked well with the pepper sauce enhancing the flavour and giving it a nice hit. The pepper is quite strong so it may not be to everyone's liking. Both the pork steaks come with a fair bit of fat, but you know what they say, fat is flavour. Overall, it's definitely worth the money you spend.
The Chicken steak (Rs. 520) was also quite nice. It's prepared pretty much exactly like the gammon steak, with the same sides and sauce, so the only difference is the meat. In this case the pepper sauce doesn't work quite as well with the chicken, as it did with the pork. We have to mention how good their fries were. It's not a huge factor but just the addition of chilli to the fries really makes it stand out.
We also tried the fish and chips (Rs. 520). This one was not really impressive at all. The chips were still good but the fish was just bleh. The batter was plain and lacked flavour and the cut of fish has bone in it which isn't something people like seeing. Maybe switch to a fillet and add a tartar sauce. But it's quite apparent that their strengths lie in the meat dishes.
Ambience & Service
Summer Garden could actually look pretty good and become a nice hangout spot, but right now it looks quite run down. If you haven't been there before it's quite easy to miss it since the sign board is pretty much unreadable. The best way to find it is to look for the massive Nuga tree on Green Path.
The service here was surprisingly fast. I'm still trying to figure out how they managed to get three dishes out in less than ten minutes. The waiters were polite and helpful. The service is old school, which is a pleasant change.
With a good location, fast service and affordable prices, Summer Garden is a good choice for filling meaty meal. It's not the most polished spot in town but it's still a good spot for a bunch of guys to have a meal.
