The Brown Bean Coffee

14, Reid Avenue, Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo 07

The Brown Bean Coffee has always been a favourite of ours at The Good Market. We finally managed to try out their stuff at their permanent stall at Lakpahana (within the Good Market Shop), and the coffee is as good as ever.

The Brown Bean Coffee has always been a favourite of ours at The Good Market. We finally managed to try out their stuff at their permanent stall at Lakpahana (within the Good Market Shop), and the coffee is as good as ever.

The Coffee

Colombo has no shortage of cafes and coffee shops, but most of them focus on a lot of stuff besides coffee. The Brown Bean Coffee (TBBC) is definitely an exception to the norm with their organic Peruvian coffee. While most other places add tons of cream and toppings to add flavour, TBBC keeps it simple and really accentuates the natural flavour.

The best part is that their prices are very reasonable. Everything is priced at less than Rs. 350, which is an absolute steal considering the quality and volume.

I dropped in just past noon, which is to say that it was so hot that it felt like my face would melt off, so the first thing we did was try out their frio coffee shake (Rs. 300), which is a sort of ice blended coffee milk shake, served in a wide brim margarita glass. I was expecting something along the lines of a coffee shake but this was far better. The best part here was that it wasn't overly milky, which meant the flavour of the coffee came through very well, while still being perfect for a warm day.

After getting a table under a fan and managed to cool off a bit, I had their cafe borgia (Rs. 270). This was a hot coffee which is somewhat similar to mocha sans whipped cream. The cafe borgia is a bit stronger and has a more earthy flavour than mocha since it has more espresso, but balances well with the chocolate and milk. If you're a fan of mocha but want something a bit less chocolatey, and more intense, the borgia will likely satisfy.

I wasn't really planning on grabbing anything to eat, but when we were speaking to the guys at the counter they informed us that they'd recently introduced waffles with bees honey (Rs. 300), so we thought we'd give a shot. While it didn't blow my mind, it was still pretty good with the bees honey being a great combination along with the waffles and vanilla ice cream.

Ambience & Location

Brown Bean is located at the back of the Good Market Shop at Lakpahana. They basically share the premises and seating but it makes for a pleasant location to have coffee and maybe meet some friends.

The service is also fantastic. The gentlemen who runs shop is really friendly and knowledgeable so don't hesitate to ask him for a recommendation.

Conclusion

If you're looking for a place to get a really good cup coffee, The Brown Bean Coffee is one place we'd definitely recommend. Their coffee is organic, tastes great and is quite affordable.
