The Cakery used to be a resident favourite amongst the plebs at office, but they've long since dwindled in terms of service and food.

The Cakery's moved a door down from where they previously were, and their new place is really awesome. Plenty of natural lighting, good food, a decent variety of well prepared drinks, and comfortable seating arrangements makes this one of the newest hangout spots where you can sit back, relax, and eat to your heart's content.

The Food

We cannot stress how awesome their food is. Having a hard time deciding between a cross section of baked goodies and their breakfast menus, we opted to try both. If you want to know what the stuff tastes like, there are a few plates of samples left on top of the counter, which is rare to find in SL. So you can just taste some of the food and then decide what you want to buy. That's how we ended up buying their brownie (Rs. 240), which is legit one of the best brownies we've tasted.

We know it's not all that photogenic, but don't judge how it is by looks alone. It's very fudgy, quite moist, and has (I think) cookie dough mixed in which gives it that lighter tone and crumblier texture.

Next up came the Lemon Tart (Rs. 260).

Quite a generous slice for the price, with a very tangy and fresh flavour to it. I wasn't a huge fan of this for some inexplicable reason (let's put it down to personal preference), but Malinthe was completely satisfied with it. I think it's because I would have prefered a bit more of a harder base —  the base here was of a much more softer texture. In all honesty though, it was still really good.

Our second favourite item right up there with the brownie, was the Squidgy (Rs. 340), which is a squishy blob of cake and deliciously light and sweet chocolate cream.

If we're to compare this to anything (at least appearance-wise), it's somewhat similar to a Swiss Roll Cake. It's super moist and the cream it's rolled with isn't too sweet, which is great.

While all the desserts we tried gets 5/5, the pancakes were a bit disappointing as it was lacking in the soft-and-fluffy department.

You get five mini pancakes (Blueberry, banana. We picked blueberry) with a side of kithul syrup for Rs. 380. The staff are young and super friendly, and suggest chocolate sauce and other condiments. I liked the pancakes and Malinthe didn't; and he has a point because the pancakes were kinda rubbery and not soft and easy to cut through — you have to like saw it up. Taste-wise it's fine, and the blueberries are generously mixed in with the dough, but the texture could still be improved a bit.

The Drinks

The Americano here is good. It smells good, isn't overpoweringly bitter, and gives you that caffeine kick you'd need without having to use any sugar to mask the bitterness. It comes in a rather large mug, and at 250 bucks, this cuppa coffee gives you value for money.

Their Hot Chocolate (Rs. 350) comes in a taller mug, and is THE perfect thing for a rainy day. It was really warm and frothy, but very very light in terms of chocolatey flavour. Where aroma is concerned though, this hits the spot because the smell of hot chocolate just wafts out and envelops you.

The chocolatey flavour could make more of an appearance here, because the milk overpowers it. It's weird that I like this when it was so light, but I'd put it down to the aroma again. It tricks your senses into believing there's chocolate aplenty.

They also stock Cherine's Quench juices at Rs. 250. That's some refreshingly good homemade gingerbeer right there.

Service and Ambience

The behind the counter staff are young, springy, energetic, and friendly, who really seem to enjoy their job. It's a great vibe, especially as it makes you feel right at home. Some of them are not too familiar with the menu but they clarify and get back to you immediately, and are always on their toes. They also make the pancakes right there (there's a seperate kitchen area within a glass enclosure, but the pancake-making-stove is out, right opposite the cashier), so it's kinda like how it is at a buffet, where you place your order and can watch it being made.

The Cakery's new space is amazing (did I mention that already?). It's very minimalistic, with gray cement floorings, white walls, and simple wooden furniture. There are a few tables and stools placed right in front, as soon as you enter.

There's another room/ hall like space at the back with wood panelled floors, more chairs and tables, and some comfy-looking couches.

Bonus point: there's a backyard (currently under construction) in which there's a playfort being assembled for kids. It looks really neat. Oh, and a balcony as well, with little umbrellas placed out. They've been open for about two weeks now, but are still having a bit of elbow work going on. Hopefully the whole place will be done soon, including the garden area and backyard.

Conclusion

The Cakery is amazing. There's almost nothing to complain about, and everything to like. They could work on their pancakes and adding more chocolate to the hotchocolate. They also have other breakfast options, and, if I recall correctly, lunch options as well. We weren't able to try out their savoury options, but will do so next time. Check this place out, it's pretty neat.

TIP

Try the juices.

What a sad sight it is to see how poor this place is now compared to years ago. Miserable service - often have to wait while the staff finish chatting amongst themselves before you're served. Coffee is served lukewarm and takes an age to arrive. Lighting inside is very dim - not in a romantic way, more of a 'we can't be bothered updating' kind of way.

The cakes are still fine. Some very good, some mediocre.

Sadly, it seems the owners have done nothing to fix the issues despite having several poor reviews.

Huge plus on ready-made cakes and stuff and ambiance. I love and enjoy both these whenever I'm there.
Food and service on the other hand is an entirely different story. Both aspects cry for revamping so much so that I cannot recommend anyone to eat other than a piece of cake on a paper plate there.

Delicious breakfast bagels, with salmon and poached egg are now my end of the week addiction and I've not found anything to compare with them in Colombo. Dear All at the cakery please don't ever discontinue them, as restaurants seem to have a habit of doing!

We were dissapointed with our visit a month ago. Everything on the breakfast menu was either "old" or " cannot be prepared ". The worst was the toilet upstairs. Pretty sure some serious turds were lurking in a corner. Thank god the kids didn't need to use the toilet.

My kids love the cakes. The slices are quite big and generous and the price seems high as most people are probably comparing to the mass produced cake in the market. But good things don't come cheap. Why? - because it costs more to make them ! The Chocolate fudge cake and the Peanut butter cake are divine !

Love what Panino does to a good old "roast paan". Ha, I picked up the tricks of the trade by watching how they make it. The amount of cheese they put in that thing should be outlawed! Try the pulled BBQ chicken melt sandwich, it is awesome !

By the way we always buy from the good market stalls, and must visit the outlet some day.

Come on YAMU! Only 4 stars!?! Granted, there are a few issues such as the lack of adequate seating. And the staff is not that well trained, but hey are always nice and willing to help - which is a lot more than I can say for most local places. But I'd give these guys 5 stars just for the food!!
I mean, really, have you ever had any cake in Colombo which even comes close to the sheer brilliance of theirs?
And for people who are complaining about the price, do you have any idea how much some of those ingredients cost? These prices are very reasonable, even bordering on cheap. Try buying cheesecake at the Hilton.

I Agree. Panino have the best cakes and sandwiches… and although the price seems a bit high, it is really value for money. However, their service……. well that is something totally different. I've been there on three occasions now, and the service has been the same…… slow to non-existent. On my last visit, I was standing around feeling rather awkwards since no one took my order, and the (Chef/Owner/Manager???) was leaning on the counter chatting with a girl and the others were just standing around staring…… it was after 10 minutes that someone actually approached me to ask if I had been served, and that was by the guy in the picture above. If they could really give a better customer service, then this would be super perfect!!
