If you're ever in Aluthgama, and find yourself looking for a place to get your daily dose of caffeine, or a juice to quench your thirst, Coffee Corner is your spot. Tucked away in a corner of River Avenue, it's tiny parlor that also serves up juices, iced tea, milkshakes, and even smoothie bowls. We stumbled across them wholly by accident.
First of all, someone (not saying who) would like to apologize for the lack of exact pricing throughout this review, simply because she forgot to ask for the bill as she was super busy gulping down all the drinks. Anyway, there is a bunch of stuff here that you can get under Rs. 500, which makes this place even better.
Let's start with the Cappuccino. Frothy and light, it came with a layer of microfoam on top, and carried a strong punch of coffee making for a good pick-me-up in the morning. However, the milk was a tad overheated, so texture-wise it wasn't all velvety, but still, it's a pleasant cuppa made from an Italian coffee brand (which the owners do not remember the exact name of).
Presented in a tall glass, the Hot Chocolate was really good. There was a proper balance between the chocolate and milk, with a subtle sweetness swirling through, so you can enjoy the cocoa flavor all you like. Make sure to stir this one well before you drink it, so the layer of chocolate lying on the bottom of the glass to give it that extra cocoa boost.
Both of the Passion Fruit and Lime juices were excellent. Served in a tall glass with a bamboo straw, they don't use sugar in their juices unless you ask them to, so the natural sweetness that comes from the fruit itself doesn't get interfered. Fruity, and not watered down, these juices were hella refreshing, making for a real treat in this blistering Lankan heat.
As I mentioned before, it's a tiny place - more like a part of a house converted into a restaurant. The veranda is shaded with a thatched canopy, giving out a home-like vibe, while the seating arrangements can be spotted in the veranda and near the entrance.
The owners of this place are some of the nicest people that you'll ever meet. They are incredibly friendly, and more than happy to assist you with tips on how to get around Aluthgama, and about good restaurants to dine-in while you're there.
All in all, our experience at The Coffee Corner was wonderful. They've kept it simple, which seem to be working really well for them. We recommend!
