Ah, Fab. It's been around longer than we can remember - since 1979 to be precise - and has consistently been keeping Colombo happy with short eats, cakes and sweets.
We like Fab. Their stuff is generally good - well-filled pastries, generously iced cakes and a fairly decent lamprais (even if not authentic).
Most bites will come to under Rs. 100 and you get the usual pastry shop selection of vegetable patties, chinese rolls, chicken pies, sausage buns, etc. The Fab chicken pie (Rs. 70) is especially good, and nothing beats a warm sausage pastry with tomato sauce.
We recently made a quick stop at the Moratuwa branch; the facade of the building is framed by leafy plants and the interior is quite plush - it looks more like a coffee shop than a place selling short eats. But that's the thing about Fab - it offers upmarket quality for affordable prices. They've got about 10 branches, including Kollupitiya, Mt Lavinia, Nugegoda, and Thimbirigasaya and these are are all clean, pleasant establishments with plenty of room to sit down if eating in.
Fab also does larger meals like burgers, rice and pizza but we haven't tried those yet. What they're really known for is their short eats. Oh and the iced coffee is good as well. But does anyone remember Fab from back in the day? If so, how does it compare to now - has the quality changed, did it use to be better, etc? We'd be interested to know.
Overall, we like Fab, Especially in comparison to newer places like BreadTalk
and Wonder Bakery. Why pay ridiculous prices at BreadTalk for average food or suffer through a poorly made Chinese roll at WonderB when you could have a nice pie at Fab instead?
If you get the chocolate cake try heating it gently in the microwave - for about 15-20 seconds. Serve with ice cream and enjoy!
