As the name implies, The Fish and Chips Colombo does Fish & Chips. Resided inside Street Rush in Mount Lavinia, they were only a few weeks old when the government-mandated quarantine period started.
And now they're back in action, so we decided to drop in for a First Look.
With a menu that's comprised of some interesting variations of Fish & Chips (Ambul Thiyal, Tandoori, Sri Lankan-style), Fish & Chips also dishes out a few seafood-based burgers. Most of the things on their menu were unavailable, which is understandable given that they just started, so we settled for a Sri Lankan Spicy Fish & Chips (Rs. 799) and a Classic Fish Burger (Rs. 750).
The Sri Lankan Spicy Fish & Chips arrived with a serving of Tartar Sauce, Signature Curry Sauce, Hand-cut Fries and Garlic Bread.
It was quite spicy as promised. Crispy and light, the dark colour of the coating sort of confused us, but then we realised that it could be because of the amount of spices it had been added with.
The fish was cooked well, cooked through, and had a very creamy texture which broke off to chunks so easily.
The Classic Fish Burger was stacked with a giant piece of Iceberg lettuce, a fish patty topped off with a slice of cheese and grilled onions. There was a heap of sauce here too, which we think that they reduce a bit, as it overpowers the flavours of the other elements at play.
We also got a Vanilla Milkshake (Rs. 450) which was milky with a hint of vanilla. A refreshing drink like this suits well to accompany the Sri Lankan Spicy Fish & Chips.
Street Rush is still working on to get back on track, so most of the stalls here are not reopened yet. Aside from Fish & Chips, only two other stalls were operational on the day we visited. There is plenty of space to sit, but they don't seem to get a lot of customers for dine-in at the moment. However, they seem to get a lot of delivery orders. Our food took a bit of time to arrive due to that.
Fish & Chips is quite new, and still putting things together. We're planning to pop in again for the full review when they're fully operational, so stay tuned!
