The Garrison Coffee House

229/1A Kadawatha Rd, Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia

A cafe tucked in Dehiwala that does some pretty good Spicy Cheese Fries but a not-so-great iced coffee.

The Garrison doesn't really refer to a garrison per se. Instead, it actually refers to a restaurant on a small road in Dehiwala which took us quite a while to find.

Ambience

The restaurant, whilst looking more like an upcycled house somehow managed to have the nicest seating on the outside. And while the concept of being outside while you eat can be romantic, it does have a level of taxation through the sun and such making an entrance.

A pool table, lots of space and the option of getting your shisha on while you wait, we liked the ambience here. It's perfectly chilled out and spot on if what you're looking for is a place to relax.

Food & Drinks

The menu at The Garrison Cafe is more or less Western in a very literal sense. With a whole stream of beverage options, we decided to start with the Penne Arrabiata (Rs. 700), as per the recommendation of our server.

The pasta was cooked to perfection and soaked in a gooey mess of tomato puree and green chillies, there was nothing else. Leaning towards the tangy side, the sauce wasn't all that bad, but not quite arrabbiata-like. A hint of garlic and herbs would have made it much better.

However, on our bill, it said Chicken Arrabbiata, but we couldn't find any meat in the dish.

We ordered the Spicy Cheese Fries (Rs. 550) which was another recommendation made by our server. Personally, I'm not big into the whole concept of drowning your fries and getting them all sogged up, but, even then, they had done such a decent job that not even I was complaining.

Creamy, with flecks of (et voila!) chicken, herbs and golden fries, this was quite good.

The one absolute great cloud of our experience came in the form of an Iced Coffee. For a "Coffee House", the iced coffee at Garrison Coffee House was far from perfect. Too milky, watery and not all that cold, it tasted like it had been made with Harischandra Coffee. If done right, iced coffee made with the said coffee brand is simply amazing, but unfortunately, in this case, it wasn't.

However, the Strawberry Mojito (Rs. 350) came as a very nice surprise of sweet, fizzy goodness. The drink came as large portion in a mason jar and was all in all a success. It might not be perfect for you if you're not into the whole syrupy side of things, but, pretty as a picture, we happened to really like this one.

Service

The staff at Garrison Coffee House turned out to be all right. Yes, they did take around 30 minutes to bring our food, but, we had nothing of real substance to complain about.

Conclusion

The food at Garrison Coffee House can be a bit of a risk when it comes to things like the iced coffee, or you can get sort of lucky with the Penne without the chicken. But, with a very nice ambience, we still think that it's a good place to drop by if you're in the area.
