Has anybody else noticed how PickMe is greedily consuming data when out and about?

About 4 updates ago, I noticed that data usage within the app has sky rocketed. Instead of improving and optimising the app, their developers are making it worse. I topped up my phone with Rs 100 of credit and opened the app to book a tuk tuk. I was in the app a total of 16 minutes. When I then check the amount of credit I had, I was down to Rs 34!! The data usage on just that single booking took most of my credit! I had to actually turn the app off when the driver arrived because I knew the remaining Rs 34 would be long gone before I even got to my destination. Now I know some of you may say that Rs 100 isn't a big deal or Rs 60 isn't a big deal, but it's the principal. Why are PickMe devs so incompetent that the app requires such heavy data usage? I spend way less data on Facebook looking at photos and loading ads! Even if I had a data plan, it would have eaten a large chunk of my allocated data! If our cellular providers gave us 100Gb and unlimited Gb for Rs 1000 etc then there would be nothing to complain about but a lot of cellular providers in Sri Lanka offer much smaller data packages and given that PickMe is so widely used they should be better optimising the app for data usage. It's just absolutely ridiculous that requesting a taxi can consume that much data. Google maps is already highly optimised so it isn't the mapping data. And tracking data shouldn't be that heavy on data either. I really hope someone at PickMe fixes this problem otherwise I'm just going to get rid of the app and stop taxis on the side of the road again. It might cost a little more but at least I'll still have data to surf and do all things I wanted.

I've used 55mb in the past month, and I use pick me atleast once a day sometimes more. You can't really look at your credit balance and say ooh the data usage is so high, that depends on your data provider. I believe you're charge something like 1.50 per MB of data used, if you don't have a data package. Check your app data usage on you phone and see how much data pick me has used for your last cycle.

The reason why I suspect PickMe is using crazy amounts of data are based on the following;

1. I had no credit/data on my phone. I topped it up with Rs.100. I didn't get a data plan so I was going to be charged Rs.1 per mb. I did not make any calls, or use any apps and all apps were forcibly closed to prevent background data usage. After topping up, I then opened the PickMe app and looked for a tuk tuk. Found one, booked it and then waited for him to get to me (watched him navigate). Because of traffic he took like 16 minutes to get to me. Once he arrived and stated the fact through the app, I then proceeded to close the app permanently AND I switched off the data, so there would be no internet traffic whatsoever. I then queried how much money was remaining on my top up and it now showed a balance of Rs.34. Now doesn't it stand to reason that if right after topping up and my only action was opening/using and then closing PickMe, that PickMe me was the app that used all that credit and data? No calls, text messages were made or other apps were opened.

2. The incident above was not the only case. Something similar had happened 2 weeks earlier, but since I used several other apps and made calls etc, I couldn't clearly state that PickMe was the culprit that used up all my data. I was at a memorial service for a family member and after the church service, I booked a mini. This driver also took his time and got lost and made a call. At this time I had about Rs.80 credit and a 250mb data package of which only 30mb had been used. While I was using the app and tracking this driver, not only did my entire 220mb of data finish, but it then continued to use up my Rs.80 credit too leaving me with no way to contact the driver as both my credit and data had run out. Luckily I estimated when he would arrive and promptly waited for him.

3. These 2 incidents weren't the only times I suspected that data was being used at an alarming rate. I noticed that like 4 updates ago, the data usage had spiked. I think the developers had changed something drastically in the app or added something that is drawing a lot of data usage. This is similar to the time when they changed the tracking software. Remember before how the vehicles actually stayed within the streets? Now you see taxis going across fields and buildings etc.

4. I am using the latest version of the app on iOS. Big mistake as I wish I had just stayed on a older version that was working fine. Here I thought they were actually improving the app. Maybe those of you who seem to be getting by with less data are running an older version of the app? Maybe the Android version is better optimized?

5. I checked my data usage for this app for the last month in my data settings and it is currently at 1.2gb!!! Is that not excessive? I am in Facebook and Instagram way more and FB only shows 640mb and Instagram at 300mb used. It's as if PickMe is secretly downloading mp3s or something in the background while I have the app opened! The worst part is I don't even use the app daily. It is more casual use. 1.2gb of data for casual use is absolutely nuts, you have to agree!

I know it's easy to just assume I am missing something, but given the recent incident of narrowing it down to a single use app, plus my suspicions all along and where the app in my settings is showing 1.2gb of data usage - that really is the cherry on top. I strongly advice those of you on iPhone's to be monitoring this app and it's data usage. If you're on a contract and just get a monthly bill showing a lump sum for data usage, you might not realize how much of that data is PickMe and therefore you might be paying way more for data than you would normally do. I hope someone at PickMe has read this and will look into it, but as of now - it is almost certain their latest iOS version of the app is eating data like a fat kid loves cake.

If it's used 1.2gb in the last month, there's definitely something wrong. Womder if it's only an issue with the iOS version as Indi and I both use android and our data usage for pickme is below 100mb. Might be a good idea to contact support and see. Maybe remove and reinstall the app and see if it makes a difference?

If you're on Android, go to Settings/Data Usage/Cellular Data usage and then you can see exactly how much PickMe is using.

For me it's used 25MB in the past month, which would cost like Rs. 5 if I'd exceeded my package (0.20 per MB).

So, to answer your question, I haven't noticed it consuming lots of data. Check your phone and see, it may be something else.

Thanks for the response indi. I've replied to Dante so perhaps check out my response to him as it addresses things you've mentioned. I didn't want to repost the whole reply to you as well, to keep the thread clutter free!

I'm a relatively heavy user of pickme and even my mobile data usage is around 50mb for the last month.
