How do you buy steak-worthy beef from the local butcher's?

Hello! Wondering how to navigate the local butcher shop - how do you ask for cuts of meat? Can you get good steak cuts from there?

Short answer, yes you can get steak cuts. But it's dependant on how good the butcher is. If you ask for fillet, generally the good butchers will provide it. It won't be pre-cut, so you'll probably get a 1 or 2kg piece of fillet that needs some cleaning up. But it will be worth it, as fillet here shouldn't cost more than 1500 per kilo from a reputable butcher and is a nice piece of meat.

If they seem like they don't know what you're talking about when asking for fillet, don't bother with them, just try a different butcher.

Definitely don't bother with the grocery chains - their local fillet is tough and not really usable for steak. Australian cuts are okay, but far more expensive.

Any butchers you'd recommend?

Puttalam Farm butcher has been consistently the best for me - they do a variety of cuts and home deliver. 77 768 7340 is the contact.

The guy at the beef stall in Kollupitiya market is okay - but you have to be very specific with him, and he doesn't always do the best cuts for steak.

Regular kade-type butchers don't have a great knowledge of steak cuts, even if their beef is good quality. From my experience anyway.

Yes - as Malinthe asked, any butchers you trust/are a regular or/know in Colombo? I’m just very new to the local beef scene and really don’t want to buy the frozen ones they don’t look fresh at all.
