Pepper spray and stun guns

Is it legal to use pepper spray and stun guns for self defence in Sri Lanka?

If it is, from where can I buy them in Sri Lanka?

I'm not too sure if it's legal or not, but I believe you can buy pepper spray at Nimrods. This is on Galle Road, close to St. Peter's if I remember correct.

Not too sure about stun guns, but they do have air rifles and plenty of other stuff.

Gearing up for a big showdown, are you? :P Safest bet is 119! ^^

Thank you for the information! :) Haha there will be a showdown if the perverts on Sri Lankan roads come too close :D 119 is too slow. A girl's gotta take care of herself ;)

agree viha, I've been both searching for pepper spray and trying to get info on the legality of usage here. however, keep in mind that while street harassment IS a punishable offense in Sri Lanka, the law is also clear on the consequences of causing physical harm when no actual physical duress / physical attack is recorded. Trust me, I too would severely love to carry around pepper spray. instead I've bought an identification spray that temporarily gets in your attackers eyes and marks them with an indelible bright blue/green ink. good for identification and embarrassment

"physical duress / physical attack" - if a man touches me without my permission that is physical duress/an attack, right? Pepper spray used in a situation like that is in self defence - so shouldnt it be legal?

@Kinita Hahaha that's a good idea. but does it actually stop the harassment? I've seen pepper sprays online that carry out both the functions.
isn't it ironic how at the end of the day, the victim might have to face the consequences of protecting herself? :|

@Fur-Naan-Doh! Oh you have no idea

Yeah Viha, it's absolute bullshit. But nothing we can do about it until systemic and educational changes stop this from the root. I'd also recommend videoing/ taking photos and calmly asking for their NIC number as you will be going to the police or if they're young, tell them you can see their school name on their uniform and will go to the police AND their headmaster. This has worked for me before, but of course ONLY try it if you're in a safe space.

Yeah we can only hope that this perverted mentality will be wiped out from the country at least a few generations down the line cos I don't see it happening any time soon.

And about the solution you gave, I have thought about doing it many times but it's too scary since these incidents take place close to home most of the time. I have a fear of being followed home and them finding out where I live. or being tracked everywhere I go since I take the same route daily and being attacked. I know I maybe sounding paranoid but only a few know the reality of it :(

Viha, i would check out a practical, modern martial art like Krav Maga. The emphasis is on effectively defending against common street type attacks/ harassment , it's a lot of fun too.
