Take a teasopoon of lime juice and add to a cup of standard kotmale/ ambewala cream. In the past ive used a jam jar- 1 tsp of lime juice, cup of cream in a jam jar, shake it up and leave it somewhere cool for about an hour.
Kotmale/Ambewala work well the UHT and heavily pasteurized imported cream wont work as well.

I make a sour cream substitute at home using curd. I learned the trick from a German expat here.  All you need is a good quality buffalo curd, plastic strainer and a clean tea towel. fill the strainer with the curd and let the liquid drain over 24 hours or more in the fridge. Put the lump so formed onto a clean and dry tea towel and  let stand in the strainer for another 24 hours. ( The liquid can be used for muffin mixes or any other kind of mix).

Transfer the ball of curd cheese to a clean dry container. It can be kept in the fridge for at least up to two weeks. When needed blend in sufficient water to make the cream.

This curd cheese can be used in all kinds of ways. I add salt, lime juice and other flavoring to the cheese to make dips for vegetables. A friend used the cheese for cheese cake and was happy with the result.
