Ah, you have quite a few options here. Chesa Swiss is always good - the food and wine are both excellent, and it'll likely have a good ambience on Valentine's Day, although it can get a little empty on other weeknights. It's expensive though - the standard main course costs around Rs. 3000. Another safe choice is the Gallery Cafe, less expensive than Chesa and good food, wine and ambience. Both will probably get booked up quickly though so make reservations well in advance.

The Havelock Place Bungalow can also be quite lovely at night and Lemon has a great rooftop view of the city. Sugar also has a good selection of wines, and it's very popular so it always has a nice buzz.

A personal favourite is Royal Thai - the food here is excellent. The setting is nice - plush and luxurious with tinkling thai music in the background, has the potential to be quite romantic.

Two great options. Food wise, both are excellent but very different. Chesa is very meaty and heavy - lots of steak, fondue, etc. Royal Thai can also quite rich, but you can order a bunch of dishes and share (if you do, try the pineapple rice and papaya salad, they're delicious). Ambience wise, Chesa might be more romantic if you get a table outdoors. The inside, however, is quite simple - it's not bad, but nothing too exciting decor wise. It may be quite cosy though, and I imagine it'll have a nice buzz on Valentine's Day.

Royal Thai, on the other hand, is more plush and luxurious - and you always have the option of wandering over to 7 Degrees for drinks by the lake after your meal.

Hope that helps a bit with deciding :) We've also just written a post on the top 5 V'day dining options, which might be useful (http://www.yamu.lk/valentines-day-in-colombo-top-5-restaurants-posh/)

Valentine's Day is on a Thursday, on which the epicurean menu is served at Tao, Cinnamon Grand. 24 fusion dishes, served slowly - you can spend four odd hours there over dinner, ideal for a romantic dinner, lovely place.

@Shru - What do you think about Tao?

I've never been to Tao, but as David says I've heard the food is good. I've always been a bit put off by the location, however - the chairs are perched by the Cinnamon Grand ponds outdoors. This is just before Breeze Bar, so everyone walking through to Taprobane or Breeze walks past you. Also, the ponds sometimes smell a bit funny.

Also, at Tao, do they still have their Epicurean Menu. Interestingly it used to be every thursday. And it is pretty epic. Not too sure if its still on though.
