Brunching In Colombo – 2021.

There are many things to love about brunches. It's a mix of two meals – breakfast and lunch, which makes it an ideal opportunity to eat, A LOT. You can get a simple toast, or go all-in with a platter of meats, sausages, cheese and eggs. The combination of sweet and savoury is always a plus point, and it's perfect for vegetarians and vegans too.

On the other hand, brunch isn't just about food. It's also a way of relaxing, socialising and bonding – whether it be catching up with an old friend, or taking your family out for a meal.

And here are some places in town that you can go for it.

Restaurants

Tropical Yum

Tropical Yum is a fully home-grown weekend venture in Borella, solely dedicated to crafting up an exceptional brunch experience with Continental and Lankan treats, and much more. From the usuals like egg benedict to Sri Lankan goodies like pol roti and pork curry, there's something for everyone here. Plus, almost all the dishes on the menu have a vegetarian alternative.

Bakes By Bella

Bakes By Bella's breakfast/brunch menu takes inspiration from Western-style breakfast – both sweet and savoury. Their Classic French Toast is absolute eye candy, and the brilliant Egg Benedict is something that one would not want to miss. You can read more about it here.

Black Cat Cafe

Black Cat Cafe's all-day brunch menu has an interesting spread of fluffy pancakes, regular and fusionised egg bens, as well as a couple of healthy food options.

Cafe Kumbuk

With a minimal aesthetic and a focus on local, organic and seasonal produce, Cafe Kumbuk shares a space with Prana Lounge, and offers a seasonal menu sampling from Asian and European cuisines, coupled with coffee, tea and smoothies.

Seed Cafe

Done as the love child between the likes of The Grind and Ceylon Superfoods Company, Seed Cafe has some picturesque dishes and great coffee, which you can easily make a brunch meal out of. It's also vegan-friendly.

The Grind Coffeehouse

The Grind Coffeehouse specialises in dolled up brunch meals and excellent coffee. Pretty much everything they've got here is homemade, including the peanut butter they use in the cheesecakes.

Life's Good Kitchen

Life's Good Kitchen is a testament to how life gets better when there's good, and more importantly, healthy food. They've got a range of interesting bagels, cookies, homemade pasta and pancakes, which they make using high quality, low-calorie ingredients.

Nivasa

Nestled on the courtyard of Nivasa Boutique Hotel, Nivasa Cafe is an escape from the stifling urbanity and serves up some well-presented, absolutely amazing breakfast/brunch/lunch options. They're comparatively easy on the wallet too.

Giovanni's

Started off as a humble, dinner-time pizzeria in Thimbirigasyaya, Giovanni's has come a long way now, with a cafe, and another branch in Colombo 03. The cafe whips up brunch spreads during certain weekends, so make sure to keep an eye on their social media channels for more details.
