From a little homespun Good Market stall to one of Colombo’s go-to dessert spots, The Cakery is doing really well. They’ve managed to maintain their fresh ingredients and brilliant taste while expanding and training their staff, and the buzz is still alive. This means they’ve passed the Colombo litmus test, by which any new establishment is hot and exciting for a few months before it dies down and everyone forgets and migrates somewhere else.
While all their offerings were generally great, there’s always room to improve and they’ve done that by trying out new stuff every week or so and seeing how their customers react. The one gripe I personally had was that they almost never had cupcakes unless you got there in the morning, and I didn’t think their meringue hat topping really did the cupcake justice.
That’s changed now and The Cakery has now expanded from the usual chocolate and vanilla flavours to passionfruit (pictured), apple & cinnamon (pictured), peach & pear, and others. They’ve also switched up their toppings to include an absolutely delicious range of buttercream, cream cheese, and chocolate that corresponds with the cupcake flavours. Luckily everything is made fresh and to-order so you can mix and match flavours and toppings to your heart’s content!
TIP: The Cakery & Panino are revamping their premises next month so look out for a range of new delectables courtesy their “”co-op counter”” which will feature their favourite picks from the Good Market stalls, from pickles to hummus. Hopefully the revamp means more seating too!
