How It's Made: Naran Kavum


Naran Kavum is an easy, tasty alternative if you're not in the mood for Konda Kavum this new year season. 

Serving: 10 naran kavums

STEP 1: The Pani Pol

Ingredients

  • Coconut - 250g
  • Jaggery - 200g
  • Cardamom - a few
  • Cinnamon - a few
  • Cloves - a few
  • Water - 50ml
  • Lime - 2 slices

Method

  1. Add the water to a deep pan on the stove
  2. Add jaggery
  3. Add cardamom, cloves and cinnamon
  4. Wait till jaggery melts before adding coconut
  5. Add lime
  6. Cook for a few minutes, till thick
     

STEP 2: The Kavum Batter

Ingredients

  • Flour - 250g
  • Water - 100ml
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Salt - a pinch
  • Sugar - a pinch

Method

  1. To a bowl of flour, add turmeric powder
  2. Add salt
  3. Add sugar
  4. Mix
  5. Add water little by little and mix gradually to a smooth batter
     

STEP 3: Frying

  1. Fill a deep pan with oil and heat
  2. Make small balls out of the pani pol mixture
  3. Dip the balls into the kavum batter
  4. Drop them into the hot oil and fry till golden brown
