YAMU’s First Newsletter.

We’ve started an email newsletter, on Wednesdays I guess. It’ll have a few quick tips on cool places to eat, drink or visit. Here’s the first one.

You can sign up for the newsletter here.

Hello, and welcome to the first YAMU newsletter. We’ll try to keep it short and sweet. Here’s some cool stuff happening in the city:

KAMU – Restaurants

Some great places to eat this week are:

  1. Curry Much: This new healthy buth packet joint on Braybrooke Place (near the JAIC) is excellent. They serve a great take-away office lunch for Rs. 200 – sometimes biriyani, sometimes rice and curry, sometimes fried rice. You can track what they’re serving via their Facebook page. They also do innovative takes on malu paan and kiribath for breakfast. (Read More)
  2. Gerard Mendis Chocolatier: They’re not cheap (Rs. 390 for four), but the chocolates here are amazing. Chili chocolate, passion fruit – all quite creative and excellent. They also have a rather posh restaurant attached. The shop is on Horton Place, near Wijerama. (Read More)

BOMU – Bars

At two extremes, here are some great places to drink.

  1. Skky Bar: This lounge looking down over the Galle Face Hotel has some truly excellent cocktails. They’re thoughtfully mixed and use high quality ingredients – they’re not just slapped together to sound good on the menu, everything actually works well as a taste. We recommend the lychee ones. Their Japanese fried rice is also excellent. They have a happy hour all day on Mondays. (Read More)
  2. Government Service Sports Club: This dodgy bar on Baseline Road (at the Moir/AIS road, near the old Airtel office) has some of the best service in the city. They do a great fried handallo and the usual assortment of arrack type local drinks. What sets it apart is how nice they are. People even offered to give up their pool game so we could play (they have a great snooker table). Ask for Selvakumar. (Read More).

KARAMU – Events

This week the big event is the Royal Thomian cricket match – running from Thursday to Saturday. Recurring events are the Barefoot Pub Quiz (from 8:30 PM tonight, that being Wednesday) and the Good Market, a marketplace of healthy food and things that runs from 12-8 PM in Battaramulla’s Diyatha Uyana space (near Water’s Edge).

And that’s all for our first email. We’ll try to keep it short and personal. Email us with any questions or tips, and let us know if you’d like photos in the mail.

best regards,

indi
