Burgers Hut.

Burger’s Hut is a new(ish) burger joint in Dehiwala. They serve great burgers and are open til midnight.

Rebellion in the Burger Kingdom

You’ve definitely heard of it, it’s very likely you’ve driven past it and there’s a pretty good chance you’ve actually eaten there – Burger’s King. The monarch of Slave Island. Once a lowly streetside cart, the small stall rose swiftly up the foodranks to claim its title as ruler of burgers. Today, the King stands tall as one of the city’s most thriving late night eateries. Come anytime after 5 and the corner is littered with chairs, customers and cars (as well as actual litter). But with every good kindgom comes conflict, and somewhere along the way, beside the sizzling patties of meat and flying buns, a brew of discord began to bubble.

Manned by a group of Burger’s King defectors, a new burger joint settled on the streets of Dehiwala. Not directly competing with Burger’s King – they’re on opposite ends of the city – the Hut caters to a more suburban outer fringe market – well-located for Nugegoda, Wellawatte, Nawala residents who don’t really want to make the trek up North.

And honestly, I can’t tell the difference. The menu is very similar (minus, however, the Charley burger), the prices are almost identical (although Burger’s Hut seems to add on the odd Rs. 10) and they keep up the excellent car service – creating havoc along the Quarry junction. If anything, the burgers here seem a tad larger and juicier than the venerable BK. The Cordon Bleu (Rs. 260 at Burger’s Hut, Rs. 250 at Burger’s King) is slightly plumper – an enormous hunk of chicken breast smothered with creamy mayo and sliced through with a sheet of bacon, and the crispy chicken (Rs. 280) is superb – again a whopping chunk of meat, coated in a brittle spicy batter with it’s length and breadth completely slathered in mayo and ketchup. What more can we say, these are great burgers. And best of all, they’re so near home – well, for us.
