Mother’s Day Mojo (Gift Ideas).

Mother’s Day is coming up this Sunday, May 12th. Probably the best thing you could do is spend time with your Amma, but as a necessary punctuation to that, here are some gift and experience ideas.

SWEETS AND TREATS

Gerard Mendis Chocolatier

Can’t go wrong with chocolate. Gerard Mendis makes some expensive but excellent chocolates. They’re Rs. 390 for four, and you may as well get two boxes. You can pick and choose. From our experience they’re all quite good. They also make some fancy cakes.

Simply Strawberries

Jagro’s Simply Strawberries is our new favorite sweet spot. It’s a shop on Polhengoda Road (the shortcut between Narahenpita and High Level Road, off Baseline Road) and we recommend taking her there rather than getting takeaway. Their selection of sweets is fantastic – strawberries and ice cream, waffles, strawberry sandwiches. It’s amazing.

Cup Cafe

Cup Cafe is a coffee shop across from ODEL (look for it, it’s awesome). It’s run by a charming Singaporean and his wife and some other expats whip up some amazing citrusy cakes and desserts. Their frozen lime pie is excellent as is that pink thing we had once – a strawberry yoghurt mousse.

GIFTS

Bloom Room

Bloom Room (behind Coco Veranda) makes great (if expensive) flower arrangements. It generally pays to go in there, see what they have, name your price range and make a bunch. If you want to go cheaper you can always try the funeral floweries down nearby Dean’s Road.

Casa Serena

Casa Serena is a secluded shop on Havelock Road (near Police Park/La Passion) that has nice affordable mum type gifts – shawls, stationery, books.

Barefoot

We’ve linked the Dutch Hospital Branch, you can go there or the big one on Galle Road. Either place has a wide arrange of nice things for mums, from linens to jewelry to an excellent collection of books. Also art, teas, milk toffee, a wide range of gifts.

Midaya Ceramics

Midaya is a little ceramics shop on the corner of Union Place and Dawson (near Vauxhall). It’s an export company that has high quality (and internationally expensive) mugs and ceramics at pretty good rates.

So those are some ideas. Of course any gift or treat should be just a supplement to what your mother really wants, a bit of your time. Unless you live at home, in which case you could perhaps give her a real gift and get married already.
