Sweetberry.

Sweetberry makes pretty good juices and smoothies. They have the regular fruits (mango, passion, pineapple) but this place tends to be more berry focused (blueberry, strawberry, raspberry).

The Drinks

There’s a candy/cakey shop next door but we won’t get into that. Sweetberry does drinks – juices, smoothies, floats, shakes, chocolate, etc. We tried a Raspberry Smoothie (Rs. 280), Blueberry Float (Rs. 280), and Strawberry Redbull (Rs. 380).

The raspberry smoothie

The smoothie is the most traditional thing and it’s good. Berries (other than strawberries) are quite rare in Sri Lanka. You need to go to someplace like Brana’s or Beema’s to find them reliably. Which is a long way of saying, it’s nice to have berries. As mentioned, they have the traditional juices, but we’d recommend trying the berry stuff. It’s tart and nice.

The Blueberry Float was interesting but, in Inosh’s words, a little funny tasting. This is because it’s a mix of soda, fruit and ice cream. The carbonated soda can come off a bit strange. Floats are a good idea though, we’d try it again, maybe with different berries.

The Red Bull and strawberry concotion

Finally, the Strawberry Redbull is an interesting take. I require a fair amount of caffeination throughout the day and Redbull, while effective, tastes a bit like medicine. In this case the mix of strawberry cuts it nicely. An interesting idea.

Service/Location

The small shop front on De Fonseka Road

Sweetberry is on De Fonseka Road near Qbaa. It’s really just a small counter. There’s a room next door which is Sweet-Buds, a place that seems to serve candy bouquets, which we won’t get into here.

Sweetberry really is just that counter, a little bar with a guestbook and concrete seating for about four people. Which is in the sun for much of the day, so not the best place for dining in. At the same time, their takeaway cups are kinda flimsy. I guess we’d recommend drinking standing up in the shade.

It’s a small seemingly owner run place so the service is quite good.

Conclusion

Sweetberry is a small juice bar which specializes in berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, etc). The juices aren’t cheap at around Rs. 300 a pop, but berries aren’t cheap. They are good. Worth a stop.
