Salad Guru.

Salad Guru is a fun little new enterprise trying its wings at the Saturday Good Market at Racecourse. Run by a trained nutritionist, Shayana, the stall has a whole range of stuff that’s good for you. They range from salads, pastas and soups to quiches and healthy tacos. Apart from that, they do these interesting “power shots” at Rs. 100 each – maca root, lecithin granules, golden linseed, murunga powder. These are supposed to fulfill your daily intake of key vitamins and minerals.

Their most popular dish is the superfood mix salad, comprised of ruby beetroots and quinoa salad with a delicious homemade balsamic vinaigrette. It’s fresh and tangy, and even the small box at Rs. 350 was fairly filling. The bigger serving at Rs. 650 should be enough for two. We wanted to try the kitul chicken salad (a Lankan twist on honey chicken salad) but unfortunately it was sold out. For a salad place, there are a lot of non-vegetarian options, which is nice for those of us who need a bit of meat to make a meal.

At these prices for servings, the salads are very well priced for the quality (and health factor) they offer. While the owner creates and tosses fresh salad to order at the stall itself, the boxes are convenient for take away and to refill with snacks. The specialty soups in a jar look great but would probably be best to take home and heat up. It’s worth mentioning that their branding is very cool for a fledgling business.

However, the best aspect of the stall is the owner herself, who helps you choose the best salad/ power shot depending on dietary requirements, ailments and allergies. If you’re looking for your weekly health kick before the decadent weekend, you know where to go.
