The Bakery at the Edge (Waters Edge).

The Bakery at the Edge is the city’s only drive-through bakery, so if you like cake and you hate getting out of the car, this place is a godsend. It’s at the Waters Edge hotel right at the gate, and they’ve got chocolate fudge cake that’s plain amazeballs.

The Drive-Through

I don’t have a car, so we did our Bakery drive-through in style – in a blue tuk-tuk. It really wasn’t as dodgy as our flash-camera photograph suggests. It’s pretty simple: you just stop by the window and place your order – we ordered like ten things – and you get it in just a few minutes and drive off. Fast service when we were there, though we haven’t yet tried it on a busy day (although it’s hard to imagine a line-up of cars like at McDonalds, just waiting for cake).

The Food

We really liked the ice cream we got – French vanilla bean – though to be honest, we ordered the White Chocolate praline and they got the order wrong. It was very thick and creamy, but expensive for a cone, at Rs. 160.

Firstly, these guys are great with desserts. We weren’t big fans of the eclair (Rs. 70), though one of us thought the filling tasted interesting like ‘tin milk’ (the search for the perfect eclair continues!). But the cakes were really good – the red velvet slice (Rs. 180) was big, with a nice creamy cheese topping, and the chocolate fudge cake (Rs. 180) was nutty, creamy and probably the best I’ve had in a really long time. They didn’t have some of the stuff on the menu though, like cheesecake.

The veg Chinese roll (Rs. 80) was filled with yummy boiled vegetables – a good choice if you’re a vegetarian – and the tuna sandwich for Rs. 200 was fresh and huge, enough to fill you up. They have macaroons too (Rs. 315 for a six-pack) – they weren’t too bad.

Taxes came up to about 300 bucks for all the stuff we got. But overall, considering the average order, you’ll probably spend about Rs. 300 – 500 here.

Conclusion

As cake people, and as cake people who like staying in our cars (obesity, here I come), we’re fans of the Bakery drive-through. They’ve got a large range of choices (cakes, savouries, ice creams, sandwiches, wraps, breads, and even some waffles), and though we haven’t tried everything, our sampling was good. It’s not as cheap as our regular bakeries but the prices are not terrible, and we think it’s one of the city’s better after-dinner dessert stops.
