The Choco Castle (Kandy Selection).

We have good memories of the name The Choco Castle, being very close to our previous HQ and as a place to grab some chocolaty goodness. They closed down their spot down Vajira Road a couple of years ago, but now they are back again, setting up shop in Kandy Selection – Nugegoda (which is again, close to our current YAMU base, yay!). From what we gathered, they plan to open a few more outlets in Rajagiriya and Liberty Plaza, very soon.

Naturally, we trotted to the spot, excited to get some desserts for lunch – don't judge us.

Chocolate Stuff

Crepes, waffles, hot & cold beverages that are mostly infused with something chocolaty in nature, dipped or topped in chocolate, this place is every chocolate lover’s dream. They do have a couple of savoury crepes and coffee-based drinks as well.

After flipping through a sea of chocolatey names, my colleague and I decided to order the Choco Castle Waffle (Rs. 790), the Triple Chocolate Crepe (Rs.750), and as if that wasn’t enough, we got the Choco Castle Hot Chocolate (Rs. 590) and a Chocolate Milkshake (Rs. 480) for our drinks.

Beautifully decked on a plate with a drizzle of melted Belgium white and milk chocolate, the Choco Castle Waffle was a sight to see. Topped off with a generous amount of sliced green apples, red apples, mangoes and some strawberries with a dollop of whipped cream on the side, this chocolate drenched wonder had us drooling.

Upon tasting, we found that the waffle itself was a bit doughy with an eggy taste. Cutting into it was a struggle as the texture was a bit rubbery for our liking. Though the waffle was showered with chocolate, it wasn’t too much, but, a little crispiness on the waffle could have made everything better.

While the layer of fruits was pleasing to the eye, the flavours contributed from them were mostly on the sweeter side. A fruit adding a swirl of sourness would have been ideal in this mix.

Next up, we have the Triple Chocolate Crepe. Underneath the mesmerising layers of dark, milk and white Belgium chocolate patterns, it was a perfectly cooked crepe – just the right amount of thickness and good texture.

There was more than enough chocolate here and it might be a bit too much for a delicate piece of crepe to handle. Still, we thoroughly enjoyed it. A hint of bitterness from dark chocolate, a bit of sweetness from white and milk chocolate balancing it out, this one was a treat!

The Choco Castle Hot Chocolate was a cup of warm dark chocolate with an adequate amount of milkiness to it. Though it wasn't too sweet, the flavours didn't quite harmonise with each other. The chocolate flavour was there, but it wasn't blended with the milk well, which led us to believe that this was made by a machine and not handcrafted. In comparison to what we tried from their previous spot, this one has the room to improve.

The Chocolate Milkshake ended up being not as chocolatey as it should which is a bit of a downer. Though it’s thick and creamy, it was on the milky side of things, and the chocolate flavour didn't come through as much we expected.

Ambience & Service

They are located on the same premises as the Macchiato and Dislin. Which makes the things a tad confusing when it comes to options. Sure we appreciate having multiple options but the space here can barely handle one outlet.

Thankfully when we dropped by the place was not as full as it was back with the Avurudu shopping and we managed to grab a decent seat.

It seemed like Choco Castle is quite not set up properly in the place since the cashier was a tad confused whether he’d have the items we wanted to order. We did have to switch our choices a few times because of that. But all worked out in the end and the guys behind the counter were polite and seemed well mannered.

Conclusion

The Choco Castle is basically a chocolate paradise. There are things that they can work on, and we can't wait to check out their other outlets which are soon to be open!
