Middle Eastern Restaurants in Colombo.

For a city with such a multi-cultural community, Colombo has surprisingly few Middle Eastern restaurants. Thankfully though, the places that we do have are actually quite good. So here's a quick round-up of places to get your hummus fix.

Arabian Knights

Arabian Knights really made a name for themselves when they initially opened up in Marine Drive. But they moved to a more accessible location on Galle Road, but the transition wasn't as seamless as we would have liked. However, what was impressive was that they listened to customer feedback made the necessary improvements and now their pretty much back to their initial standards. Plus they do an efficient delivery.

Moreover, they’ve opened up a new branch in Thimbirigasyaya, and we loved our experience there as well.

Shawarmaz @ GP

Shawaramaz is a new addition to the Middle Eastern food scene of Colombo. The place might look like your average restaurant from the outside and the inside ambience left a bit to be desired as well. But the food they offer and their service is quite good. Their Hummus with Chicken simply blew us away with quality and flavour. And kudos to that Special Chicken Shawarma!

Chambers

Chambers does authentic Moroccan cuisine, in a classy, quiet and an unassuming spot. From their refreshing Morrocan Tea to their heavenly toasted Arabic flatbread you will be spoilt for choice here. We think they do the best Tangine in Colombo, simply because of the luxurious and decedent Mutton Tagine we had. Along with their good service and nice ambience, you are sure to have a great dining experience here.

Bliss Lounge

As you can guess Bliss Lounge is a sheesha lounge that serves up Mediterranean food. They have a range of options for you to choose from and their Moutabal and Hummus particularly stood out from the lot we tried. The ambience is cool and dark with drapes all strewn overhead adding to the whole Arabic vibe. Throw in a shisha with a couple of friends and you will be in for a blissful time.

August by Mama Aida's

August managed to sweep us off the feet, mainly for their chic, relaxing ambience. The staff were incredibly hospitable further adding to the overall experience. Chicken Yasser With Lotus seed stood out to us from what we tried here for its presentation and quality. Even though they are not the cheapest they bring a level of high quality to the Middle Eastern food scene in Colombo.

Hadramout Restaurant

Hadramount is spot known for its affordable Arabic fare. The place seems always busy, with people moving here and there, which adds a touch of liveliness to the place. While their food is not top-notch, for the price they are quite good. We didn’t encounter any issues in the service and the place is rather welcoming too.

Acropol

Acropol is what we'd consider the Middle Eastern fast food joint in Colombo. They specialize in Greek and Lebanese dishes, serving some of the good shawarmas. You need to know what exactly to order though, since their rice dishes leave much to be desired. One thing we can't complain about is their Greek shawarma, which a sort of roll your own shawarma that you can customize each bite with as much chicken and sides as you like.

Saffron Persian Delights

As the name suggests Saffron specializes in Persian Cuisine and they do it really really well. It's run by a couple of Iranian ladies and they serve some authentic Iranian snacks. We didn't get to try their Saffron rice which we've heard good things about, but we liked their shawarmas and sweets. Their mutton shawarmas are arguably the best you'll get in Colombo. They also serve up Bamiyeh which is like a Persian doughnut of sorts: soft doughy pillows that have been deep-fried in a syrup- yum. But as it happens,  they don’t currently have an outlet and have rolled back on the one on Good Market as well. But they said that are happy to take orders depending on the size of the order and that you can pick it up from them.

With all this talk about Middle Eastern foods, we can't help but remember the amazing Hummus we tried from Jah's Hummus. They are a home-based venture specialised in one thing – Hummus, and really good ones at that.

So what's your favourite Middle Eastern resto in town? Let us know in the comments!
