Green Cabin, as any uncle our auntie will tell you, used to be one of the only places to eat in Colombo. There’s plenty of other options, but Green Cabin is still a solid Sri Lankan, especially their lunch buffet.
The Food
The vegetarian lunch buffetThe highlight of Green Cabin is their vegetarian lunch buffet. In our last review we had dinner there, which is nice, but ordering Sri Lankan food a la carte is a bit unnatural. The best meals are where you just have the curries available, which is what this buffet provides.
It’s Rs. 280 per head for a vegetarian selection. In our case red or white rice, purippu, mustard cucumber curry, pollos curry, beet root salad and ample pol sambol, pappadam, roasted chilis, etc. You can get chicken or fish curry separate, and they’re good, but not necessary.
It’s a really good rice and curry.
The Location
Green Cabin is a charming courtyard like space. It can get a bit hot, but there’s verdant flowers above you and it’s a generally scenic place to eat. There are family sized nooks in the corner and regular table seating as well.
Note that the buffet is on the verandah, you need to walk through the regular restaurant section (which looks quite normal) to get to the interesting buffet part.
Service
Some of the people working at Green Cabin have been there for years. They’re charming and efficient in a very old-school way. For the buffet your service interactions are quite limited but they’re not disappointing.
Conclusion
Green Cabin is an old-school Sri Lankan classic. Check out their lunch buffet for verandah dining at its local finest.
