The Commons Coffee House, located on Flower Road in Colombo 7, has been around for more than 20 years and has built a reputation as a cozy, friendly café. It’s one of those places people keep coming back to whether for a relaxed meal, coffee with friends, or just some quiet time on their own. With a recently introduced range of Sri Lankan-inspired sandwiches, we decided to visit and see what’s new, while also trying some of their long-standing favorites.

Ambience

The Commons has always been known for its homely atmosphere. The mix of sofas and separated corners makes it feel warm and welcoming. You can choose to sit inside or outside in the garden courtyard. The vibe is relaxed, perfect for casual conversations, working on a laptop (yes, they have free WiFi), or even just enjoying a book with a coffee.

Beverages

The coffee menu is extensive, with both hot and cold options. We tried the Caramel Macchiato, which was smooth and satisfying, and the Iced Milo Latte, which is a customer favorite. The Milo Latte stood out as a unique option you don’t find in every café. It’s chocolatey and feels indulgent but refreshing.
Food

We started with seafood classics. The Crab Roll, which has been on the menu for over 20 years, lived up to its reputation. Simple, flavorful, and a Commons signature. The baked Crab was richer, creamy, and comforting. Both crab rolls and this baked crab dish are excellent picks if you love seafood.

The Prawn Masala Kottu was full of masala flavor exactly what you’d expect from a proper Sri Lankan kottu.

The Afghani Chicken Tikka Kebab Wrap brought crisp and creamy flavor wrapped neatly in flatbread and was filling.

The Tuna Mushroom Fettuccine gave us something different: a creamy pasta dish that worked well if you’re craving Western comfort food. This had salmon taste more than tune flavour

One of the most exciting updates to their menu is the introduction of Sri Lankan-style sandwiches, a range inspired by local flavors, but presented with a café twist. From this new lineup, we tried the Hot Honey Chicken Breast Sandwich. Made with seasoned roast chicken breast, diced mango, cilantro, onion, lime, and paprika, all served on ciabatta with mango salsa, this sandwich delivered a burst of sweet, tangy, and mildly spicy flavors. It’s a refreshing option that balances comfort with a touch of creativity. For those looking for something meat-free, Commons has also included vegetarian picks in this new sandwich range. The Grilled Eggplant & Hummus Sandwich stood out as the vegetarian option. It was fresh, balanced, and filling without being heavy. These sandwiches make a nice addition to the Commons menu, and are worth trying if you want something both local and different.

Desserts are a big part of Commons, and the display is a temptation in itself. Their range includes crème brûlée, coffee caramel, carrot cake, Oreo tiramisu, chocolate cake, red velvet cake, butterscotch banana cake, passion mousse cake, and more.
On our visit, we went with Blueberry Cheesecake, a creamy classic that leaned on the richer side.
Their Caramel Macchiato & Iced Milo Latte – Both drinks made a sweet, comforting pairing with dessert. The iced Milo latte in particular was a nostalgic favorite, with that familiar Milo taste served café-style.
Staff & Service
The staff were friendly and attentive. Food didn’t take too long to arrive, and the service felt efficient without being rushed.
