The Bear Necessities.

Cheesecakes are all over town, but finding a good one is a lot harder than one would think. Which is why we were quite glad when we came across this Instagram page by The Bear Necessities.

They're a home baker that's solely focused on freshly baked cheesecakes, and some really good ones at that.

The Cheesecake

[Our pictures weren't the best (which you'd find in the gallery), so The Bear Necessities were kind enough to send some good pictures of their Passion Fruit Cheesecake after seeing the review].

The number of cheesecakes that The Bear Necessities whips up is truly impressive. They have around 15 kinds of them, which are categorised under Classics, Specials and Limited Edition. The Classic range has the usuals – blueberry, strawberry, raspberry, blackberry and the likes, while the Specials come with not-so-common toppings like Lemon, Peach, Oreo, Cookie, Caramel Glaze etc. As for Limited Edition, they've got Cookie Monster and Brownie Explosion.

The price of the cheesecake depends on the category you choose. We went with the Passion Fruit one which comes under Classics, which was priced at Rs. 2900, while the Specials and Limited Edition are sold at Rs. 3300 and Rs. 3500 respectively.

Featuring a beautiful crown of vanilla frosting, and a rich layer of passion fruit on top, followed by the cakey middle, and then the biscuit base at the bottom, it's one lovely cheesecake that we've got here. Each and every layer contributed a distinct flavour, which altogether made for well-balanced one.

Let me start with the graham cracker biscuit base. It was light, buttery and was not sogged up, and added a tinge of sweetness to the overall flavour.

On top of that, lies the fluffy cake base. Incredibly smooth in texture, and not at all crumbly, it was slightly tart, so the natural sweet and sour notes of the fleshy passion fruit coulis can emerge through easily. To help sharpen up the taste even more, they had added bits of passion fruit to the base too. Seriously, it's pure passion fruit bliss served in the shape of a cheesecake.

The crown of vanilla frosting further eases up the sour notes of the passion fruit, by adding a swirl of sweetness to it. Altogether, this creates a stellar flavour concoction of sweet, sour, and boasts a whole lot of fruitiness.

How To Order?

The Bear Necessities is based in Ratmalana, but they also have a pickup location in Colombo 07. They do deliveries to locations in Colombo, through Uber Taxi whenever requested, and you'll have to settle the fee for the driver.

If you're ordering one, drop a WhatsApp message to +94773958663 with the cheesecake/s you want, 3 days in advance, and confirm the order by depositing/transferring the amount to the bank account number provided by them.

Conclusion

From the presentation to texture to flavours, our cheesecake by The Bear Necessities ticked all the right boxes. We still bare our love towards Sugarcube's Blueberry Cheesecake, but this is definitely one of the best bets for cheesecakes in Colombo, and an affordable one at that too.
