After an initial hiccup, Arabian Knights has bounced back well. The food is nearly back to their former glory, and coupled with the new venue, things are looking up again.
The specialty here is middle eastern food, but they also whip up a number of out-of-Arabia dishes. However, in this review, we have stuck to some dishes that they're known for.
Featured above is the plate of Chicken Kebab (Rs. 740) which is comprised of two kebabs, and the sides of Saj bread, French Fries, Parsley Sambol, grilled capsicum, and a lime slice.
Carefully marinated with herbs, the kebabs were nicely grilled with a golden colored touch to the outside, decorated with a few charred spots. It had just the right amount of seasoning, which helped to bring out the meaty flavors so beautifully. Succulent and not too oily, its flavors were brightened up with the parsley sambol and the squeezed lime on the side.
The Beef Tagine with Couscous (Rs. 700) was a delight. With tender chunks of beef simmered in a hearty blend of fragrant spices, its flavor was enriched by the added honey and dates. Aside from the pieces, we also spotted some shredded beef in the mix. The flavor was bound perfectly to each and every bit this plate, from onions, carrots, and olives to couscous and the meat itself. Every bite was a piquant burst, which left us wanting more.
Arabian Knights does some good juices, mocktails, and smoothies, and we tried a couple of them.
The Yalla Poma (Rs. 485) that comes under their smoothies was a delicious mix of homemade yogurt, and pomegranate. Reminiscing a pomegranate lassi, it was made with equal parts of the two elements, so the flavor was well balanced - aside from being refreshing and filling.
In addition to the natural sweetness, the Watermelon Juice (Rs. 370) had only a little sugar, so you can savor all the natural flavors as you wish. We wish it was served in a tall glass though, considering the price we pay for it.
On the sweet side of things, we went with the Muhalabia (Rs. 455) which turned out to be the best way of ending our meal. What makes a good Muhalabia is the simplicity of ingredients and the sharp flavors, and this one delivered both. Light and creamy with a hint of sweetness that comes from rose water, it was topped off with some pistachio bits, which made for the extra flavor.
In our previous review, Bhagya describes its ambience as,
"a predominantly yellow and orange theme, which may come off as gaudy to some, but still works pretty well overall. The interior is also decorated with middle eastern themed arches and some artsy metallic ceiling lamps."
It's still the same, and no significant change can be seen. The waitstaff was prompt, accommodating and super helpful.
After all these years, Arabian Knights seem to be doing pretty well, and going strong. We enjoyed our experience here, the same way we did in our past reviews.
After all these years, Arabian Knights seem to be doing pretty well, and going strong.
Arabian Knights has long been one of Colombo's Middle Eastern staples, with reasonable prices and strong flavours.
After an initial hiccup, Arabian Knights has bounced back well. The food is nearly back to their former glory, and coupled with the new venue, things are looking up again.
So Arabian Knights has just moved from their small but popular eatery at Marine Drive to a proper restaurant in Kollupitiya Galle Road. It's an awesome place to hang out at, but the food was bit disappointing judging by their old Marine Drive standards.
Arabian Knights is a new and absolutely charming Syrian restaurant right by the sea. It only has about four seats and is more a takeaway joint, but if you walk in you'll be glad you did. Everybody there is quite charming (I said it twice cause it's true) and you can taste that they've put love and care into the food.

Don't get the harira. Just don't. Like cheap tomato soup from a can, or worse, like watered down puree with some spices. Weirdly sweet.
I'm not sure how Yamu has given this place a 4/5. They've been meh since moving to colpetty.

If anyone wants to try Good Arabian food… hands down this is the best you could find…
There hummus/ Thabule & kebabs are exceptional!!!
4/5
We loved the hummus, which was done three ways. But the cheese sambosek was yum! It had a bit of a dominos cheese pizza effect on it! Must try.
Prices are also fair and the service is great :)

Being a regular customer very disappointed of the way whoever is handling this page and replying.
You may have had a lightning strike and your phone systems were down as you say which I doubt now after the attitude I got from the person replying and shows the importance you have for your customer despite of sending out a message way before closing time and instead of making upto a customer you give them attitude.
I regret patronizing your restaurant. I'm don't with you guys. And the reason is not your food but our attitude.

So I call Arabian Knights to get my food delivered, and all they had to say was their delivery boy is out of town, so they cannot deliver. Truly customer service is awful. They may want to be remembered that it make take months to roll their magic with their great display of food but only seconds to lose customers with unacceptable service.
Nice Food, After the reading i went last week. Mexicana, Chicken Spicy, Polo Mint Excellent….Thanks for the post
Food was excellent. The staff were very friendly, one of them sat with us and was engaged in a good 15 minute chat about how they prepare the meal, and their plans for expansion. A must try.
Dunno whether its me or the shwarma, buy the mexicana seems slightly sour on one side and crispy on the other. Savory-sour. Some may like some may not.
Best place in Sri Lanka for Arabic food!
ok first of all the shawarmah you ate was a syrian shawarmah, which is why the bread was toasted. and secondly…i LOVE the food here! Haha. The prices are really competitive as well, making it one of my favourite take-out spots in Colombo
@ Arquib - I felt the same and didn't like it dt much. I bought the Arabic Shawarma which tasted sour. Spicy Syriana was comparatively ok. But definitely not the best shawarma I've tasted. Guess it didn't live up to my expectations :( nyway the banana and avocado milk shake was good. A diff taste but wud have preferred if the taste of banana didn't over power the avocado. overall i doubt i'd be a returning customer
like some said it's nothing much and not value for money. We order two chicken shawarma and practically we had to hunt for the chicken pieces. I don't know if it's only me or the time I went (it was a Sunday around 6.30pm - 7.00 PM) the service was horrible all the staff were out side talking to some other people and me and my wife had to wait about 10 minuets to place the order, they weren't really helpful in describing the items as well. Then finally when the food came, we though of eating indoors there were no lights and the only light we had was the lights coming from the kitchen, so practically we were eating in semi darkness. Maybe a cost cutting approach. All in all there is no big deal about this place.
Oi guys, i too had a disappointing experience with these guys. We got a home-delivery done for Falafel and Shawarma. They arrived within 20 minutes and the packaging was good. That was where all the good things ended. One plate of Falafel was just four measly heart-shaped pieces with some sad yoghurt dip and raw veggies- no dressing! Shawarma was some dry-hard roti with roasted chicken in it. Sadly- neither items were anywhere near the real deal that one gets in the Arab world. huge disappointment!
best shwarma in town value for money very friendly staff recommended.
the best authentic Arabic food at an affordable price
keep it up AK
Had Mandi rice and it was excellent, generous quantity sufficient for 2, large juicy marinated chicken piece, long grain basmathi rice with great flavour, lovely tomato sauce and vegetable dish to go with it, definitely recommend this dish
We had a sad experience. I went with bunch of my friends and the place was not good as we expected. Not good for indoor dining I'd say.Friends who had the shawarma said it was good. But the saddest part is all of us who went there ended up with diarrhea. :( (I feel quite logical to think it's from here because only the friends who went there got it.)
I hope the place will make sure this won't happen again to other people.
Fazal : Sorry to hear that , I am aplogy and can you get you contact number I will contact with you soon as I can
The food had the perfect arabic taste loved it … yet the dine-in area was alil dissapointing as it wasnt maintained properly and their service is something they could do better cz i wasnt given tissues … bt must say i loved the food :)
Did somebody say Mandi rice was good? the rice was ok… but the chicken was horrible! Total waste… and that horrible pickle and the tomato sauce…
Had lunch there- the seating arrangement gave a taste of what it would be like living in an abundant neighbourhood. Everything was covered in dust. Had shawarma and its the worst I've ever tasted in a long time.
wanted to try it last night based on the review, The place was a mess, let alone being dirty , the food was also not that great, As some ppl mentioned, it was just a sour chicken , if we were lucky enough to find any, and also one of the smallest shawarma's i have had. Maybe the quality has depreciated as always
i'm been having the shawarma from the day it was opened and i love it… just make sure you eat it before it gets cold…… and if you are in a hurry order the food before you get there… :)
Hmm shawarma is good but the way they pack things for delivery let them down. All the crispy items was soaked and lost the crunchi feeling. I got down a shawarma and one called mindi rice which was for me terrible. Just a rice and chicken full of spices. Definitely the shawarma is good! But need to focus more on package.
My experience at Arabian Knights was not that exciting. After reading the comments I stopped in for lunch and happened to order a combo meal. For some reason the floor was full of water and I had to point to the workers to clean it out. The falafel was good, but nothing extravagant. However the shawarma with cheese did not convince me enough. The bread was too thick and toasted. The salad tasted too sour. The only dish to actually satisfy me was their damascus fries.
Maybe this is an isolated experience. But my ranking would be 2 out of 10 stars
Not great for dine in only a coupleof tired aluminium tables/chairs-the waiter did not know much about anything but was quick and tried hard. The food was average value for money.
We got this voucher that they have at MYDeal.lk and went there for lunch, expected a nice seating area with AC (ofcoz) and there we see a tiny 20 by 20 area where hardly 4 to 8 people can sit and the kitchen is right next to the seating area. It is as if your sitting right beside the kebab grill the flaming heat burning up your face in addition to the amazing weather in Srilanka at 1 pm (tell me about it). THERE IS NOT EVEN A FAN FOR THE SEATING AREA AND THEY SAID THE MAIN CHEF WAS NOT THERE SO THEY HAD NONE OF THE "RICE DISHES" FOR "LUNCH" (what more to say)I would rather refrain from even rating the ambiance and if you insist let me give a big "F". Now coming to the food, they wrap sum burnt rock hard shredded chicken between papadam like kubus/bread. the coleslaw sucks and the falafil was not cooked inside. when we returned it they said they would replace it, which they failed to, plainly ignored us and never even fried new ones. THE WORST PLACE WE HAVE EVER BEEN TO IN TERMS OF EVERYTHING, SERVICE, TASTE AND AMBIANCE. SUCKS TO THE CORE!! PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY ON THIS SHIT.! I WONT EVEN GIVE A SINGLE STAR OF RATING!
Of course the shawarma was great but it's either the small size or not so enough filling that just is a buzzkill!!
@curiouskitty I honestly don't know, maybe they're too busy with the rush of moving location? I'm hoping it's a temporary glitch.
Im an avid fan of YAMU, but I usually dislike seeing personal based opinions coming into food reviews. It takes away the essence of a non biased review and makes me judgemental of how much I should trust the review. The laban might not be your favorite, but having lived in the M.E, this is the closest and best we can get here in SL. (My opinion ofcourse)
Also, i visited this joint a few days back and would have to say their food was really good. I thoroughly enjoyed it. And i assume, with regards to the shawarma portions, this is a trend I have noticed widely in Sri Lanka. Every food joint is blamed for either serving less, charging more etc etc. Often we blame the submarines contain less meat, or the Big Mac contained less lettuce. Alot of us simply accuse these food joints for being unjust but portion sizes usually includes a lot of math with cost calculations before theyre fixed. (trust me, im an economist, so i have a faint idea of how these stuff work :) )
Finally, maybe this review REALLY does highlight the actual experience. Or maybe it does not. But im just saying, when i visited them, i really did enjoy the food. And i really dont care about the ambience, i just go for the food! And ofcourse, i sure will visit them again and if i do find anything negative i will post my non biased review! So remember the name, its Trey! Cheers!
Really insightful comment Trey :). The thing is, the writer straight out says she's not a fan of Arabic beverages, and I think it's good that she mentions that rather than just saying it tasted bad. I mean at the end of the day everyone has their preferences.
As for the experience I guess Yamu can only comment on what they experienced on the day they went. One of the biggest stumbling blocks for many of these smaller franchises is that they tend to lack consistency. So one person may have great experience on one day, and another person could experience just the opposite on a different day.
A bit dissapointed to read the new review of the new AK outlet…YAMU I guess its a bit too soon to comment on coz these guys hav just started & a very limited basic menu available… I was dining around the same time for Ifthar when this review reliesed… on 24th July… Sad to see you all missed to comment on the little piece of heavenly vegan Hearty heart falafel… So crispy on the outside n so soft in the inside perfectly balanced n just melted in the mouth… It certainly did stand out on that first platter dont you agree?
Also Its sad u didnt try the polo mint drink… It was super awesome… Yepa we did get the much loved Dasco fries a bit soaked up in oil… but instantly recieved additional french fries to make upto it :-) well I gess its understandable as tiny things can go wrong every once in a while…
Their unique shawarmas were awesome & quenched my long crave for it ever since they closed up their old plc, but like you said would hav preferred moreof that yummy filling inside and the old pickles…
And last but not the least I totally agree and DEMAND Ak for bigger dessert cups… it was way toooooooooooooooooooooo yummy… Mahalabia… yummmmm….
But overall I loved walking in here and the entire experience with lovely Middle Eastern Ambiance, Beautiful Melodiuos Arabic Recitation at the background, Very freindly and approachable management, Efficient staff, Authentic food & toys under the stairway to keep my boys busy and give me time to indulge more…
I'm not a big fan of Yamu's new kids who are more fascinated with their SLR cameras than the food that is served up to them. There has to be a bit of pedigree and global dining exposure before you call yourself a so called reviewer. You need to have dined in a few continents and experienced an array of service before you can pass as an authority and influence others on their dining choices.
How can you judge the quality of a kebab if you eat it 15 mins after it is served on the table? How can you judge a Laban, which is a staple in any middle eastern Iftar…. If you don't like Arabian Beverages. What the heck are 'Arabian Beverages' anyway? Have you ever heard of Qamardeen and Jallab before?
What benchmarks do you have to compare the AK shawarma in Sri Lanka? What's an example of an above average shawarma in SL? I think we stop taking Yamu and it's bunch of just out of high school reviewers seriously and stick to our good old friends and family for more qualified opinions in the future. This is not a case of sour grapes, but we've observed the reviewer carefully and quite frankly disappointed with this piece of writing, it lacks experience and certainly is not in line with the current trending opinions at the outlet.
NJ, I don't know if you've noticed but Yamu isn't your average food review mag - it offers the perspective of the average customer, not that of a connoisseur. You've missed the plot entirely.
Went this evening. Complete disappointment compared to the old AK from Marine drive- they've definitely made changes to the food composition (cut costs?) and gone for the big-is-better route.
The old AK meals were 9/10 times consistent and good in taste, quantity and quality. The new place has not only reduced the 'meal' (no more chips, hummous and fries available when ordering).
Looks like there's new management too…sad, as i think this is the end of the old, much loved AK.
I might add, the sharwarmas we had no longer made with arabic bread, and seem more like roti wraps…
Just walked in and walked out five minutes later. Disgusting service, a horrid lady who just barked out defensive comments. There was no attempt to even serve a customer. All because I told them they needed to indicate where the building could be entered from, and when I said they should maybe say which items on the menu were available at what time. Considering at 1pm, all you can get are the rice dishes and kebabs.
Having worked in the middle east for a couple of years as a chef, I can only recommend the place for his food and athmosphere.
A modern trendy touch with arabic style.
Love it !
NB Give them a bit of time to fine tune the dishes … it will be even better and better ….
I went to this Arabian Knights with a small group as a part of an office diner. We all adored the interior styling of the restaurant; beautiful colors and arches. All paired with the lighting of the place, which makes the ambiance so perfect.
But the food we ordered tasted either bland or strange. I ordered the famous shaverma, which practically everyone on the table who tasted it felt it was way too dry for my and their liking. The dishes were not generous at all, with small portions and its taste here and there. Compared to the price offered for these menus, they're completely not worth it.
We ordered several drinks as well, which I thought had the ingredients poorly blended; they just felt like they don't go well with one another.
The desserts were quite nice, but not too special.
AK service is very good and welcoming. But with the mediocre main menus, I find it difficult to recommend this place. Maybe only to enjoy the place and have no expectation on the food …
A strange local lady is also around and not very welcoming … the owner they said.
I just visited this restaurant on Sunday. It was so crowded and busy but must say the customer service is superb. We ordered a mixed grill - perfect . Tropical delight - wow . Hummus - amazing ambience - good but a little on a dull lights muhalabia- guess you can't make out the main ingredient but it taste different . Overall all very authentic arabic restaurant lovely place lovely people working there and very friendly atmosphere.
Anura - weird comments indeed! The spelling mistakes and style of spelling gives away your cover. Not many Anura's in Sri Lanka who love interiors and simply go to a place just to enjoy the place. Very poor and unexpected that false reviews are posted to influence this page. Yamu: you guys will have to do some tripadvisor style screening and filtering of comments - or else this would become a place for people to wash their dirty linen.
http://www.arabianknights.lk/menu-1/ BULLSHIT 3 stars!! Look that that menu, it mind blowing, I still haven't tried them but the 1.15, chicken liver with promogonate juice sounds Orgasmic!! Go again, review them now!!
Just dined lat night at Arabian knights and they surely deserve a 4.5 rating. The menu is limited but with so many new varieties that we can try from. If you don't know what to order how to order the lady ( I think she owns the place) helps you order ad suggests what you should try. The service is excellent and the food served is hot and fresh. They had a bday celebration and the song was all in Arabic so it all sounded and looked so traditional . Well done boys and the manager( I think she's the only lady handling a bunch of toubg guys)
Just a great experience! Beautiful place to sit and eat - such great people - we tried so many different plates - difficult to pin point a favourite - but on the drinks side the Polo Mint was amazing - so different and refreshing - on the food side, chicken liver went down a treat as did the mixed grill - the falafel was to die for - got lots of help with the menu which was great - can't wait to go back and try some more! - loved watching the chef working through the window! Great Place, Great Food, Great Team!
Simply amazing. What a lively welcome . Entered during busy hours but was attended immediately. Amazing decor though the sofa side is a little too uncomfortable. Food is too good. Born in Saudi I must say this people do serve authentic Middle East food. The Mocktails have amazing names and the camels fury is the best of All after the polo Mint. Loved the 3 types of grill combo they offer an best is they customize it according to your choice of flavour too. Service is superb and love the way they all say good bye and see you again one after the other. Deifinitely going back.
Thought Of a quick bite but it was a full fledge dinner . We ordered a humus, mixed grill and Mocktails.mocktails we served within 5 mins humus in 3 and mixed grill they said 12 but arrived after 20 mins. First we were really disappointed but as soon the first bite taken our anger just vanished as we could identify how fresh it was and served directly from the grill. They are really very busy during weekends. The humus was more tasty than we expected and the Mocktails dessert storm and polo mint were simply refreshing. I am so glad arabian knights is back.
We were at Arabian knights on sun afternoon for lunch after reading their review in Sunday island. I must say this was one of the honest review abt a restaurant.we were wondering what's so special about their humus (it's available in a lot of places here in colombo) but we were wrong . Their humus is out of the world. The ingredients are so well blended that it just taste delicious. The hot dip was really hot but it was out of the world. We asked the manager to advise what we should have from the hot starters section. Cheese sambosek, chicken liver and baba ghanouj was her advise and we followed it. There was no regret at all. Infact we ordered another plate of the liver and sambosek again. The shawarma and grills were cooked to perfection and the final ending the brownie …. A must try! Keep up the hard work with the smiling faces around and we are surely coming back again.
Great place to have arabic food. The food is absolutely authentic and loved the mocktail camel fury. They gave every table labne as a taster and it was just amazing. The owner is all around making sure every table is taken care of and also minds the kitchen to make sure the food is perfect and on time. Great service and great food!
Was at Arabian Knights last night and must say never eaten a shawarma like this before in Colombo. Simply mind blowing. Nice smiling faces around and the music is fabulous. The food is really authentic and the parsley said was simply delicious . Surely going back for a complete meal.
I went in for dinner last night. Amazing place with amazing people all ready to welcome you and feel comfortable. The owner is all around to see that everything is going smooth and customers are well taken care of. When you seated they offer you complimentary hot dip and fresh bread . Very tasty! I ordered the mixed grill which can be customized according to your preference of meat . It was hot fresh and juicy and the taste was amazing . I was recommended to try the camels fury as I wanted a drink with pineapple. And I must say it was awesome that I ordered one more later on . The humus was creamy and the meat and pinenuts to it was an amazing add on . I loved the food and will definitely be going there again as the owner said if you eat chicken liver it's a must try … So there I come again (soon)
Nice place to have Arabian food. Went last night and no regrets at all. Humus , tabouleh, dubai style shawarma and polo mint. Delicious dinner with great people around. I will be coming back soon !
Was at Arabian knights for lunch to try the Mumbai style Biryani but they have stopped. Was disappointed till I decided to try the smokey rice . Loved the charcoal effect and the spicy sauce it was served with. The polo Mint is so refreshing. But you guys need to add some more rice dishes with some exotik gravies. I am going again to try the shawarmas next time .
Was there for dinner. Very tasty shawarma and mocktail. Best shawarma in srilanka .
Arabian knights have changed their menu! Was there last weekend to enjoy some Shawarmas but instead had the new dishes. Had Double Kabab sandwich and the new mocktail wild wadi. I would aurely say it was so delicious . My bf had the chicken burger and their meat was yummy. I would grade them more than 5* as they improve every day and are ready to take every comment and feed back from the customers . Sarwath - I asked her name is doing a good work running from kitchen to customers !!
Sri Lanka best shawarma and humus. And double Kabab a new additions to their menu is so delicious. I am surely going back to try some new food they have started. Staff is very friendly and the music is very nice.
The chicken platter is good and tasty but do not order any items involved with only veg and cheese as it is below par in taste and not consumable at all.
Tried this place with a small hesitation. But it turned out well. The food is so awesome! Tried Kebsa rice and smoked chicken rice. They were up to the mark. Their portions are so worth to the price. It's something you don't really get from many food joints in Colombo. However I will definately go again to try out more food. It's 5 stars from me.
Never again. Tried it for the first time and my friend and I both got food poisoning from the shwarma.
We were both sick for 2 days over this.
Plus when we went to order, the first 3 items I requested for were all unavailable which was why we both ended up getting shwarma's.
Beware, my stomach has suffered enough!
We had to host a 20 people dinner at Arabian Knights and I have to say we experienced the best service ever! It was so easy to communicate with them beforehand to have everything arranged. And I also emphasized we wanted the food served as soon as possible since we were going to arrive very hungry after a adventurous day. The service was quick, waiters and the manager was so polite and helpful. The food tasted amazing! We were very happy with them :)
ordered delivery Extra nan Bread was not cooked just pale colour.meat did not had BBQ taste as expected.Hommus shawrma had less meat than shown in pictures not too keen in ordering delivery.
Ifthar meal is a steel for rs.1,350/= per head. The ambiance of the location and the flavors of the food synchronizes well. The meal literally took us back to our good old memories in the middle east. Thanks to all at Arabian Knights for a memorable meal.
