Someone said these guys did a good milk shake so while taking a little walk around Cinnamon Gardens we dropped in for some thick and callorific, barley liquid refreshment. They've got a pretty distinctive shop front and its great to have another place you can just drop into in Colombo 7, which due to the large distances between shops and eateries isn't as foot-friendly as it should be.
Anyway, once you walk through the little entrance tunnel you reach a surprisingly spacious but not particularly well appointed interior. There are certain lapses in taste and decor that while sort of passable by Colombo standards are pretty glaring given the Gregory's road surroundings. I mean, while its called Choco Luv its got a sheesha lounge, some childrens rides (misguidedly placed right next to the sheesha lounge) and, inexplicably, a mexican(ish) themed food stall which sells tortillas and tapas. Its just too many things in too small a space - the chocolate/Ferrero Rocher theme alone was clean and potentially cool, but now its just a hodge podge.
Anyway trying to ignore the jarring décor we set about the important task of ordering our milkshakes. We settled on a Ferrero Collection and a Nutella shake, although the Kinder Bueno and Oreo shakes also looked promising. Our liquid lunch arrived fairly quickly, and despite our quibbles with the interior the shakes were somewhere between fine and good. The price at Rs 300 a shake is reasonable and they were sufficiently thick and tasted of Nutella and Ferrero Rochers. Our qualifier here is that they weren't anything special - Cargills magic ice cream, a bit of nutella and some milk I can do this myself at home in five minutes, however it's true I don't always have a bottle of Nutella handy. So, well, if you're looking for a Nutella fix head this way, or if you're in the neighborhood and craving calories this is a handy option..
Still, given the promising Ferrero-bar concept and the Gregory's road location I just cant help but feel something got lost in the execution.
Their hot-mint melt is better than the rest.
